DYM

Post by damnyoumongolians » Tue Mar 30, 2010 7:40 pm

Hi guys!

Ive been turning out a few remixes and original tracks over the last few months. Its mostly commercial sounding, chilled dubstep although some have a bit of dirt thrown in there! Heres a few examples, it would be great if you could check em out. Ive managed to get em on a few blogs but theyre still sounding a little amateurish to my ears although that might just be because I know 'whats under the hood' so to speak, some people seem to like em!

Thanks for any feedback! More details plus free download links below.

Cheers dude, they would be firsts! Just checked out your track too. Nice use of the live sounding drums and the clever minimal vocal is great! Creative stuff, nice mood all the way through!!

Dude you have absolutely nailed every single element of these tracks except sub bass... I have a feeling that might be why they're sounding amateurish to you. Seriously man, all of these are absolutely massive tracks with brilliant instrument selection and nicely separated mixes, you just really need a fat roaring sub bass on all of your drops underneath your mid range bass!
Really enjoyed listening to them never the less, but get some energy in there between 30-90Hz and your tracks will be absolute fire!!
(With exception of the last track which has sufficient sub energy!)

this is a lovely tune, really feeling the intro. the pads and the atmosphere of the whole song really brings out emotion and the drop is big.

Wirez, thanks a lot man! Youre absolutely right I struggle with the lower reg, gonna have to look in to the techniques and get the theory down a bit more. Do you have any pointers?

Sub's are easy man, just a sine wave, low pass it just below your kick, instantly adds weight.

Yeh man just play your sub bassline the same as your mid range bass... You're aiming to be in the frequency range of around 30-90Hz with your sub bass so if your monitors are quite small and don't reproduce the sub bass that low, use an analyser to be sure you're playing in the right frequency range. When you've done making your bassline, analyse again and get rid of everything above and below the main content of the range you played with high and low pass filters respectively... Like I said, this will usually be between around 30-90Hz :)

There are other tips to saturate sub bass to make it more audible on a smaller system and all sorts of other tips on the bible thread in the production forum... But all that's generally necessary is a sine wave like J said!

DYM: liking the tracks man, esp the magistrates one, but agree with the sub bass comment then theyll be sounding real good.

here's my new track, think ive finished the arrangement so looking for some feedback on it, not sure whether to keep the different speed bassline before the main drop one, but any general feedback appreciated!

lacking sub, too much midrange.
also the mix seems abit empty
vocals fit well. and its a good wobble.
just a few finishing touches and its awesome!

I would appreciate any feedback on this track! It's kinda old, before I ever knew about dubstep but it is 140 bpm so it's easily mixable at least ;)

Please note, I dont know what happened by encoding it to mp3 from ableton as it sounds a lot shittier now, and you can hear some phasing issues in low range. So I'm wondering if anyone can give me pointers on what could have caused this? But also looking for feedback on the actual song besides the shitty mixdown.

Thx!

doesnt feel like the drums cut through enough to me, in fact they feel a little quiet and lacking punch throughout. the higher sustained bass sounds like it could do with a bit of dirtying up with some distortion or something.

i quite like your snare, the funny off beat bell sort of thing sounds a bit odd at first, but when it comes in later it seems alright, maybe filter it in? not really feeling it when the bass goes realy screechy. could probably do with some more in the way of atmosphere, maybe some strings or pads.

any tips/critisicm/feedback is appreciated! has a sorta progressive feel to it. deep pads and melodies made for losing yourself in thought :P
will return the favor! thanks
ooh i like that percussion in the intro, could maybe be tuned to the rhodesy synth thing a bit better, but i like it. nice pads, and im liking the skippyness off the beat, feels like you could have done with a better kick to me, and the hihat type thing is a bit harsh. really liking this though, really cool idea. feels like it could do with a little bit of filling out here and there but its very nice. different. id quite like to do a remix of this at some point if you'd be up for it :D
