I have a few New Years resolutions for 2014 but I have one in particular I want to share. Most all of you know me as a music guy in one way or another. Be it as a producer, DJ, promoter, talent buyer, passionate visionary or opinionated asshole, most of the titles I've come to fit the mold of revolve around music. For as long as I can recall music has coursed through my veins. When I started to appreciate music of my own choice it was primarily HipHop I gravitated toward. I immersed myself in this genre and culture as much as I could being where I was, how I was raised, and the available sources I had at the time. The more I got into this music the more I loved it. Hiphop has traditionally had a competitive spirit almost since it's inception. The idea of "I am the best" or "I can one up you" resonates heavily with most MC's, DJ's, break dancers, painters, writers, promoters, producers, even the general fans and supporters. I as a fan was by no means immune to this mentality. When I was 14 or so I thought WuTang Clan was the "best"! Nobody was "better" and in the competition of hiphop they were the kings. Even within WuTang to me Method Man was "the best". Gza and Raekwon were close seconds but they were not as "good" as Method Man. After Wutangs second LP WuTang Forever the output that followed didn't quite hit me the same way for one reason or another. My beloved WuTang clan had changed. In retrospect, of course they did! They are humans and with time we all change in certain ways. We learn, we grow, we adapt to change around us, however at the time to me WuTang clan had "fallen off". The talent they once possessed was no longer. Sure I recognize they didn't suddenly become unable to make music but the music just wasn't what it once was in my ears and at the time this meant it was "not good". My thoughts about music as a whole over time while expanded vastly genre wise still kept up the idea of good or bad, and the best or worst in each genre I came to identify with. Over the course of the last few years I have probably expanded my musical interests more then ever in all the disciplines I practice including that of listener and enthusiast. Somewhere along the line though something that will more then likely change my life forever happened. It wasn't a big specific event or time I can pin point but more so a series of many many small experiences that made an idea gradually more present to me. It was the realization that music isn't a competition, it isn't about who is best as there really are no means to measure these things. Even charts, record sales, or show attendance don't really mean a whole lot in terms of quality, artistic integrity, and or any other measure then that perhaps of familiarity or accessibility. In the end all those that contribute to, or practice any discipline within the realms of music are artists. Music is art and everyone involved in any creative process within that art form become artists. Sure some are more or less prolific, some strive to cover uncharted territory, some look to expand on what others have done before them, while others choose to follow trends in popular art, but in the end all are artists. The idea that one is better then another to me has become preposterous. It is all simply art. We all have in front of us a blank canvas. If you choose red paint and make a vertical stroke and I choose blue and make a horizontal stroke both have merit and both are pieces of art that weren't there before. That to me is what art and subsequently music is about, creation and contribution. The more art we create the more art is able to be created and all art has merit. Now back to my resolution... In 2014 and beyond my resolution is simply to not judge art but to appreciate it in all it's forms.

I'm sure some of you out there have some strong arguments for things like sonic quality or theoretical complexity and feel free to share below if you truly feel compelled to but I'd more so urge you to save your breath or finger typing energy because this doesn't need to be your resolution but it is mine.
