Why do people that used to have a drinking problem sometimes still refer to themselves as alcoholics? Is it because they are still constantly craving it?

Because the problem doesn't go away the day they stop drinking and many get drawn back in a long time after they've quit

Why is it only drinkers (that I know of)? People who quit smoking don't call themselves smokers.

Alcoholism can be a number of things. Like physical dependency or emotional.

I don't think you can say you have a drinking problem and not be an alcoholic, but an alcoholic might decide to not drink.

It seems a bit pessimistic to me

It's actually optimistic in a sence because society accept it as a condition, so they can seperate it from their being and just treat it like a condition.

Being an alcoholic is a psychological condition though, I'm sure there's a comparable word for serial eaters
