Re: [NYC] 3/30 KODE 9 & FLYING LOTUS @ LePoissonRouge
nosaj was great. first time seeing him, and his take on westcoast glitchy dance music was great. i wasnt expecting much, cause to me the west coast sound has gotten a bit to cookie cutter but i did walk way talking about the set, and will check out his material as time goes on. a fresh taste on his genre. =
kode9 first time as well, i had very very high expectation going into the set, after reading some DSforum reviews, or maybr it was here. the start of his set, was choppy, in his track selection at least. i felt like i was getting torn to 5 different places at once, it was a bit much to get into @ first, but as the set progressed the cohesiveness soon followed. track names might be off, but i know he dropped
zomby - tarantula
zomby - something else
scuba - three sided shape
joy orbison - hyph mngo
gemmy - the production screamed gemmy, so maybe an unreleased.
(tracks not in order just what i remember)
allot of heavier house, dub house, i dont know what the fuck people call shit anymore. but throughout there was strong ethnic rhythms & vibes. that was what i took away the most from his set, or at least what i gathered he wanted to display during the set. alot of tracks with bitches singing in languages i couldn't understand, it was in fact a great time. end of set he really picked it up with the bass heavy. a few real wobbler tracks in the mix, NONE of which ide ever heard before (thats not saying much, but def some unreleased material)
if anyone was there what was that track he kept toying, playing with this dubby-middleastern, mandolin type sounds towards the end, that was one of my favorite tracks of the night, maybe even a new production of his. he played for almost 90 minutes.
fly lo came on fucking strong, playing his mega JAUNTS quick and getting things groovin. i feel like dying and the weezy remix. behind him on stage were two huge projectors with SICK SICK SICK visuals throughout the entire show. i have a 3 minute video with atrocious audio that i will upload later.(iphone'd) its worth watching @ least 1x. since im at work dead right now, i had to leave early on in his set. if anyone was @ camp and remembers that ridiculous (there was really only 1) tune he dropped mid set, super heavy bass, and synths, like mechanical army trooping into the town square, (idk thats my description) he played that as well.
venue was weird last night, they had the main entrance closed off, and the side open (never been in the side before, well for what i can remember, and ive been going to lpr for at least 2 years) security was in a funk and pissed at the world, per usual. the place was super sold out, no tickets re-released, everyone was looking for a tickets. weirdos smoking dutch masters outside, undercovers poppin kids off bleeker for smoking pot, (couldna been me had a joint in mouth when they pulled up, (LUCKY TO DEATH) delicious, blue dream joints front and center. overall great fucking tuesday. wish all midweek NJ > NYC trecks were that good.

Re: [NYC] 3/30 KODE 9 & FLYING LOTUS @ LePoissonRouge
Last night was ok but I feel like the vibe was more a 'concert' than a party...I was feeling Nosaj for an intro set while the place was filling up...Kode 9 was ok, but I feel like his set was all over the place. It was hard to dance to and seemed to jump around a lot. Fly Lo was great but again...got that concert vibe, so I wasnt as eager to make my way through the crowd to find a spot up close to start dancing. After a few in and outs, we left around 2 or 3.

Nosaj Thing and FlyLo were great I thought - when FlyLo dropped the Burial/Radiohead/Martyn mashup I nearly lost my mind. Kode9 was kinda weak I thought - too much reggaetone/house tunes for my taste but he did drop some really cool tunes. there were definitely too many hipsters at this show, no one was even dancing! me and my friend would look up at random points and see a space around us because we were the only two people groovin in our area - come on NY!

Re: [NYC] 3/30 KODE 9 & FLYING LOTUS @ LePoissonRouge
I am just so confused, kode9 was great, I thought his set was verydanceable and diverse. no obnoxious basslines just good dubstep tunes. U people liked flylo? I was very very drunk and remember very little but it seemed like a grating set that I couldn't really groove with at all. Itseemed to me more like a metal show than a DJ set.
And kode9 dropped dva - natty which is sick I love that tune.
I got the concert vibe too but that's probably because no one was really dancing. During flylo I don't think people really could and then at kode9 I don't even know why they weren't.
I wrote this on an iPhone idk why I have 2 diff font sizes

Re: [NYC] 3/30 KODE 9 & FLYING LOTUS @ LePoissonRouge
I think a lot of people were going into Kode9 expecting him to play strictly dubstep because he is, afterall, one of the founders of the genre - I respect what he did in playing other types of music but they were all too similiar IMO. almost every song had that reggaetone drum beat (which is annoying as hell). towards the end he started to play some really deep, dark dubstep tunes - none of them had any midrange wobbly bass either, just a nice, deep, rolling sub.lalanana wrote:I am just so confused, kode9 was great, I thought his set was verydanceable and diverse. no obnoxious basslines just good dubstep tunes. I was dancing my ass off to FlyLo - his set was super energetic and he played my fav song of his (massage situation). the only problem I had with him was that sometimes he manipulated a song too much instead of just letting it play so people could vibe to it.

without the artists consent up front, releasing recordings of live events is tricky business.. there's nothing that pisses off some artists more than this question..
"hey, we have a recording of the performance you did two weeks ago, would you mind if we released it?"
because if they never wanted it recorded in the first place, they now feel powerless and disrespected
