just wanted to point out that ramadanman is a student, and he's producing (under two names), playing gigs, running labels and radio shows... get your hustle on, time to grind

I'm doing a maths degree so its pretty fucking hardcore, it just takes up so much time!
im using a Technics 1210 and a 1200 at the mo, so im not gonna be gettin any upgrades in a rush :P

i actually started toying with Reason and a tiny bit with Logic 8, but its so in depth that i dont kno where to start.
the production bible on DSF is fucking massive and being the lazy tnuc i am, i cant be arsed to read it lol
Yeah same I got Reason and it scares me with how complicated it looks so for now im gonna stick to DJing until I get some master jedi to teach me how to use Reason. I tihnk what im gonna do is just mix at as many clubs as possible on south coast so that a large area have at least heard my name and by then I should be pretty good at using production software.

wanted to point out that reason is a cake walk compared to logic

also someone said "take requests", but i would advise against this. the best thing to do is to define yourself, stick to what you believe to be good and be true to yourself. if what youre doing is good, a crowd that enjoys it will eventually gravitate towards you. I guess what i'm trying to say is, do you. what if untold took requests? he would be a wedding dj, not a pioneer...

I dunno if I'd call Reason a cakewalk ...
Logic is so much easier to use from the get-go. Quite honestly, I don't agree with you at all, fractal. With VST support, learning Logic means learning a bunch of different 3rd party apps...but the sequencer, mixer, effects channels, bussing, routing, all that, seems like these functions could not be simpler.
Reason is a very unique, "closed" system, that demands lots of time and experimentation to achieve professional results. The audio engine is a lot poorer tho, and I'd call Logic a better program overall... but Reason is deep too, especially when you get into funky combinator stuff, mass sidechaining, wonky routing, etc.

Re the OP. Best way to get your name noticed is to get better at making music. Period. Stop thinking about yourself as a name! Start pouring your love and energy into tracks, not networking.

maybe it's because i started in reason and just recently switched to logic 9, but we'll have to respectfully agree to disagree :)

yeah true being student you got more time than most ppl working fulltime, but if you cant hack it fuck the producing for now in my opinion, dont want to end up with out qualifications and not really making it in the music biz aswell

I'd say being busy is not a good excuse. Believe it or not, I'm attending 2 unis in 2 different countries, and i also play in a basketball league and i still find some spare time. Also to the people who are agreeing and disagreeing over reason and logic, i think you need to find a software which you think that it suits you and be creative. You can make shit tunes even if you use logic or reason...but if you're clever enough you can make tunes in some softwares like magix or w/e. Many "so called" producers start using (let's say) Logic, only because some big names are using it, thinking that you'll make same quality tunes like them, but just go and check out youtube and see for yourself how many fools are making shit tunes.

Softwares don't make the difference, your head does.

I'm pretty convinced there's an undefinable element of charisma involved in a lot of successful artists/people/whatever. You need to have something others are attracted to, beyond just skill. Diamanda Galas would be a lot more famous today, otherwise(just an example...)

Past that...

Keep busy, don't be a completely self-absorbed asshole who never notices anyone else(even though you may be trying to fight for yours, people will notice instantly if you're not in it for anyone but yourself), and yeah, knowing people is a lot. Also being lucky that the people you know have actually heard what you do...

yeh i've got a lot of respect for the local DJ's (most of them anyways).
i've just came back from Hospitality in Birmingham and i was SOOO chuffed, some random guy came up to me and asked me my name, and he recognised me from the times i played out at that same club before! :t:

Joe Nice

And that's all I can think of right now.

Argon has a record label to push things, but all Joe does is spin and promote Dub War NYC. Simply DJing really isn't enough. Tiesto even said it himself, something along the lines of "to be a superstar dj you have to make superstar tunes"
Oneman?
I've heard Oneman productions. But there are people I missed.
BunZer0!!! The guy produces some music, but he surely didn't get "famous" with his tunes. Just like Oneman, he's booked because of his dj skills, not for his productions obviously. Never heard a tune by him btw

Being lucky is definitely important its all about who you know, I did a promotional work for a fellow student DJ and it was nothing but meant Ive now got him as a contact and friend meaning it will be easier to get myself into the DJ scene as he will let me play at any gig he does. Just gotta make sure I dont suck lol!! I have to admit even though I am a student I do have A LOT of free time, speshly now as its Easter all i have to do now is revise for exams but theyre not till May...meaning I have like 3 weeks to practice...shame Im leaving decks here to go back home to London lol :(
