yep. shuffles can on some occasions lead to 2 tunes being almost incompatible if say, one track is swinging one way and the other one, the other, leaves you for a teensy margin in which to keep the tracks in time. learning swing/ shuffle , structure (ie counting bars in and knowing where breakdowns are) and keys (harmonic mixing) is half the battle to good mixing.

example - this is the reason Guidos tunes mix together with each other so beautifully, because he has built them with different chords within the same keys -- so the instruments in the tracks harmonize.
Thatll take a while yo, learning a 'rule of thumb' formula helps too, for instance 140 + 1% = 142... helped me think in proporton, it because touchier the faster you speed up or slow down...
true, but not sure if maths is the best advice, if u get me. If i was the teacher I'd say learn tempo until you can judge bpm in your head with your own ears. finding the first beat of the first bar or wherever you want to cue from is essential as well, for phrasing, and then probably (if i was still in teacher mode) I'd make my pupil put on a blindfold , phones on , one handf on wheel one on pitch lol actually tht sounds a bit wrong

also good headphones are an advantage, as when you heave more detail it leaves your brain less work of distinguishing where the peaks of the , say hi hats/kick/snare whatever element of the tune like you prefer to focus on to match up.

perhaps not something to write in the bible, lol, but Imo its like riding a bike we could write essays about it but its just one of them thangs ya gotta do over time

hmm...

I've been a college radio DJ for a few years now, extremely bunk set up with one functional turntable and 3 CDs of which 2 are functional.

I also have VDJ, I play music at home off of this, so I've been learning that program for awhile just for fun.

I have no DJ aspirations at all...but I think there's one dubstep night in Ottawa, and I want to get a weekly event going at some point that focuses on bass music in general. So if I want to get that started I pretty much have to step up the mixing skills. Although I'll reach out to some next people who DJ and are also interested. I'd probably rather MC.

Yeah I wasnt really sure about that either, I tried to make it clear you should learn a little bit of that to have in the back of your head to give you an idea of what your doing... never a crutch, no need to figure it out for everything you do. You can hand me a track that I dont have not a clue about the bpm n if its sensible I can work that shit into place on the fly, n I feel like alot of newbies arent getting that sense with new visual matching with software... its like math but even wooorse. haha.

At 10bag, yeah, I know what you mean man, theres not much to cover outside of little tips on how to beatmatch, but gear, and more advanced technique is left out on this board alot with djing. note the mixing in and mixing out sections, I hope to have these entail discussion of a very creative process, as those two topics can encompass so many MILLIONs of different techniques that it would be cool to have a collaborative chat with other people as to what they would do to effectively put that wow factor in thier mixes in theoretical situations...

math is handy for the techniocal side but it comes natural. as long as your decks pitch fader doesn't need a tune up you should learn your tunes basic bpm and what the fader will do to it to beatmatch technical side for quick mixing. that and double drops. amazingly enough most edm has a formula for the dj that just needs an ear and some basic math and knowledge of his or her tunes.

Yeah, am. Ain't done a mix in over a year tho, used to travel all over doing it 93-03 but kinda gave up. However, kept realising themed mixes once a year up to last year... Classic Rave, Jungle History Lesson, etc.

However, going to get back into it. I have two Vestax PDX-d3's and a shit old Intimidation Blue mixer I bought when I was a teenager - no xfader and the two channel sliders are crackly as shit. Been doing the themed mixes in Acid, but want to get the new Serrato and a new Vestax mixer as soon as I can spare the cash.

Working on my tunes, so am going to create a new showcase mix when I have stuff together. I always try to do a kind of progression in my mixing, from soft mellowness into the darker stuff then the harder/jum-up edge and this is what I'll be attempting to do again! :)

I find that double dropping in dubstep can sometimes ruin it, depending on how much is going on in the tracks and how well you EQ it obviously. With DnB I guess its a different ball park, lol

I found that when I was starting out(7 years ago), writing down mixtape playlists with the tempo corrections next to each track allowed me to advance my mixing ability really fast. It's kinda cheating, but it allows you to focus on your mixing and transitions while only having to worry about touching up the beatmatching at the time. Dont try it live though, you'll look like a tool!

I remember the first moment I realized that I had learned how to beatmatch: I had my headphones in at a record store and in the back of my head I could tell how much I needed to speed up my headphone music to match the store music.

I'v been mixing for a few months now, learnt on vinyl with the same 3 or 4 records and I just got a DVS. It's so much more fun having more songs to choose from, I'v been mixing between 2 and 4 hours every day :D
One thing I was wondering if someone might be able to help me with, mixing between songs that are such different BPMs you can't pitch them low or high enough? For me that is mixing from reggae into dubstep, because whilst dubstep stays between 138-142bpm mostly, reggae can vary from 120-170bpm (well, 60-90)
So how are people here mixing between reggae/roots and dubstep? The only ways I have been are turning off one deck so that it slows down, and using other songs to bridge between the more extreme tempos. I find it hard with reggae because reggae and dub DJs don't often beatmatch, infact they often use only one turntable anyway.

I was quite competent at this art until uncle Gunther married a Finnish woman with whom he had 17 children, we were short on cash so the decks and the goats had to go.
