Ill host, deadly, whyrez, sharma, mad ep, and legend4ry wherever the fuck hes at... your my admins, we're done.

I completely 100% understand that was a joke but it raises a valid point, the idea that any advanced subforum would have to avoid becoming some sort of old boys club where users are admitted on who they know, not what they know, and the posts descend to in-jokes and back-slapping, or whatever.

I think it could work ok. The voting needs to be done by a group of people or something

Rep idea is ok, but not an invitation only subforum, the n00bs learn from asking experienced people questions, thats how it goes.

So the n00bs can only read, not write in this advanced forum, and the Pro's wont bother going to the old production forum because thats what they made the new one for, to get away from all the silly reposts.

Too much of a divide, its gonna be new people teaching new people, and elitist having a fucking party. Just keep the rep idea.

adding ur cons only makes both idea not seem great cuz either we have some corrupt bull or we got noobs repping each other. neither works under the worse conditions

Thoughts:

I like the idea of a more 'mature' production forum. The time is right for it, there are producers who started here in 2006 posting on the dubs section and now have a solid release CV. The scene grows and develops, it's only right for for DSF to represent that.

I definitely don't like the idea it being a private, members-only-can-see it thing-- the info should be there for everyone to access and hopefully learn from.

I also highly doubt that php bits can be implemented, but i'll ask.

As far as who's allowed to post-- there's a few things. Having people submit by tune is certainly a good idea, but that'll require a ton of modding, so we'd have to come up with a team and develop criteria before we could even begin to choose who makes the cut. And what format? Things can get messy.

to start, my simple suggestion on how to create the divide would be for producers who've been released, be it Vinyl, CD, or digital, or artists who also run a label. No, it's not fair as there's a ton of producers who have no intention of garnering releases and simply do this for fun, but it does impart a built-in divide. Rather than a PHP-based system, someone else has vouched for your rep, via deciding to sign some of your material. It also inherently ups the ante of discussion-- it goes from being "how do i get signed" to "how do I manage a release schedule," and the discussion of how "how do i start a label" can develop into how to manage and grow one.

Like most things, it's not perfect but it's a start. Also as an American i have some faith in the free-market system to a point (tho it clearly doesn't work for environmental regulation... egads), and this kind of works in that way.

let me know what you think and i can get the ball rolling. Already had discussions about it with one of the more active mods on the main part of DSF, and he/she's behind it.

@dave

i agree with the signed/released idea actually but if we do need to get a group of people to listen to songs with neutrality and judge them i nominate myself and knell and kaiori breathe

deadly habit wrote: honestly he may be busy, but how often have you seen macc around with this influx of rehashed basic threads as of late?
I am exceedingly busy at the moment, there's no more to it than that. I do pop in most days, but if I don't see something I can help with (or make a shit joke about) then I don't post. I'm no help at all when it comes to making wobbles like *big producer* cos I have no idea what *big producer* sounds like. I'm too busy working or catching up on 60's jazz :)

Anyway, FWIW and assuming I have followed this all correctly: I think this is a terrible idea. These questions were around before DSF and they will be around after. This smacks of impatience, has a slight whiff (not too bad though) of elitism and punishes those newbs who don't blindly post the same old crap. The people complaining here are obviously able to spot a rehash/rubbish/hasn't-searched thread, so just dont bother with them. If someone obviously doesn't read the stickies and all that, then bollox to them.

Seriously - what good is a forum with the tacit intention of helping people develop, if there's only noobs on it? How will they progress? You're only going to contribute to their confusion due to wildly varying information/misinformation given to them by other noobs. Don't you remember getting that one killer piece of advice from someone more experienced than you? Don't you remember reading something written by someone who had more experience and learning a lot cos it wasn't locked away or hidden?

It's the users' responsibility to make the forum. The people angling for an invite are the ones who should be doing their best to develop the forum in the direction they want. You want more advanced topics? Discuss more advanced topics. You want less rehashes? Don't answer. It takes time to change the 'momentum', but if you really want it, you can make this place the snobbiest forum on the internet, with time and effort in the desired direction.

Anyway, personally speaking I am always happy to help. I like it. I'll repeat (and have repeated!) the same thing a hundred different ways, I will keep coming up with crap analogies about cakes/bands/pies until the penny drops.

[Having read intermediate posts] Of course, if this new forum is to be about music BUSINESS, as opposed to production, then forget everything I just said

BTW I have never released a dubstep record in my life, so presumably I wouldn't be invited :6:

Even though i've never released anything, I think the release divide is a good starting point. Adds a lot of proffesionalism to it. And perhaps if you made the rep system only for the people that are already inside, that would stop mass repping...

Yeah macc I think the idea would be better if newcomers can read but cannot start new posts...Although they may come up with good questions and discussions. This idea needs to be well thought out before we "lock off" one section of a forum.

It was you Macc, you talk so much sense, I'm so sorry, you make me feel bad when you get all emotional on posts

At the same time though, damn I've read a lot of books since my first few posts on DSF... It's not like DSF was ever here to spoon feed me or wipe my arse, it has been a great help and I love the community aspect ( :w: ) but noobs are getting younger and in a generation of less education. As much as we can teach them how to produce, should we really be teaching them how to read and write as well

Not true. In South London everyone I know who is into music says unless you have a tunes out on 12" than you are nothing. Everyone with a PC is now a producer and most of them are releasing tracks digital one way or another. It has devalued any weight that was attached to being a producer imo.

It takes nothing to release stuff digitally and anyone can do it for free no matter what their music is like. Most of it is forgotten about by the end of the day:)
