Re: Trojan Horses
-.- 2 days ago I tried to download a torrent from a site using Firefox, but it only downloaded the exact page I was on.. not the file. So I thought 'what the heck, I'll try to IE to download it instead' and that's when it all went wrong. Didn't expect such a big ass difference in safety.
Anyway, my internet is running mad slow and I'm getting 'antispyware soft' scans. Antispyware soft is basically malware disguising itself as a virus scanner. Would something like Avast or Avira cure this? o.o

Re: Trojan Horses
One of the previously well known, but now defunct AVs - Dr Solomons (now bought uot by Symantec or McAfee I expect) - built their product through writing viruses if Internet folklore is to be believed.sofa_king wrote:Do hackers tend to put out infected AV software more than other shit? I was never able to find a safe version of Norton or anything. Seems like you're just asking for trouble.
They'd spread viruses and then put the cures in their virus checker so you'd need to use it... but because it also did all the other viruses and cost the same as all the other checkers, people bought it.
Now that's an effective protection racket!

Re: Trojan Horses (and other horrible shit)
In any situation where I already know there is some shit that got on the computer (or even if I'm not positive) I run the Malwarebytes scan and it clears it up. I haven't had anything get past it yet and it's free. http://www.malwarebytes.org/Genevieve wrote:-.- 2 days ago I tried to download a torrent from a site using Firefox, but it only downloaded the exact page I was on.. not the file. Just be sure to check for updates every time you run the scanner.
Re: Trojan Horses (and other horrible shit)
sorry im not gona read the thread and check if this is still relevant, but:
you can sometimes "extract" .exe files with WinRar. whoever it is that makes this malware will take the original software, put it in the same folder as their own dodgy executable and merge them into 1 .exe which, when run, executes both.
To avoid this happening is as simple as installing winRar, right clicking Setup.exe and choosing "extract here". When you look through what comes out, it will be obvious if what I just described has been done. In my experience of illegal software (no apologies), this is very often the case.
sorry if that's bloody useless!

Re: Trojan Horses (and other horrible shit)
I've been using it for a few days and every day I get like 12 results and it can only clean up a few.tyson wrote:In any situation where I already know there is some shit that got on the computer (or even if I'm not positive) I run the Malwarebytes scan and it clears it up. Avast doesn't detect anything.
My internet has slowed down tremendously and I get weird voice clips through my speakers every 3 or 4 minutes.
Fuck.
