What's with all the hype about Mount Kimbie?

Dont rate Mount Kimbie highly or most of the Hyperdub label except Zomby and Joker realeases...its the sub genre of dubstep I just dont like

What have Mount Kimbie got to do with Hyperdub?
All their releases are on Hotflush

Yeah they don't sound like anything I've heard on Hyperdub at all beyond the fact that their music is a little deeper than your average tune. That's like comparing DMZ to Kode9 because neither of them trend towards mid-range basslines.

Side rant: I hate it when fans of certain music pull the "you're not mature enough" card to defend their taste. It's just as bad as "girls like it in the club" or "it's made to be heard on a loud system". I listen to everything from free jazz to psych-rock to Hip-Hop to rare soul records and back. If I find Kimbie to be a little sleepy, it's not because I'm some 15 year old kid hopped up on skittles and redbull while playing X-Box, I just prefer my tunes (even my deep tunes) a little harder. That LHF EP on Keysound is a great example.

not to argue your side rant point too much but in alot of instances that is the case. i consider myself to have some pretty open musical tastes as well , but not everyone does. alot of kids out there have no idea about great music that was before their time and they have trouble understanding musical context.

also those other excuses you gave can be valid as well. sometimes there's a reason why things dont appeal to people other than pure taste

It's still intellectual laziness to me a lot of the time though. At the end of the day, it adds credence to a false notion that certain softer sounds in electronic music are "better" or "more intelligent" and that's just a falsehood to me: the important thing is innovation. I can admitedly be a little defensive on this subject because I find very few critics looking at dubstep from the outside looking in appreciate the physicality and community aspects of the music. It's easier to appreciate a complete album in this style from an indie vantage point but give me a fresh, banging single that inspires a gang of producers who inspire a gang of producers mutating the genre and THAT's what really gets me hyped about dubstep. In way, that other direction is too solipsic to me.

I'm not necessarily even saying that about Kimbie, again I actually quite like Crooks & Robbers for what it is. If anything, it's certainly made me reflect a lot which bodes well for it's long term listening prospects.

as long as everyone on the dancefloor is dancing i dont really care at the end of the day. sometimes the softer stuff is too soft for me , sometimes the minimal is a little too minimal. doesn't necessarily mean i dont get it or im too young, shit im 26 so im not exactly a fresh faced noob. but i will say that certain stuff like mount kimbie and james blake, even burial, does not appeal to some people who don't have that musical repertoire, that knowledge of contemporary and historical music to put it in context. it just sounds like noise to those people.

but like you said, everyone has their preference. just cuz you don't like mount kimbie, doesnt mean you "dont get it".

I liked their first 2 ep's after the album I lost interest. The ep's captured an emotion and atmosphere that I found indescribable yet essential to what I look for in music. I found the album didn't have this however.

are you serious? this could easily have been released on warp a decade ago.
