Cool, but expected. The real breakthrough will be identifying which ones actually have interesting planets and working out how to survey the planets... we're pretty fucking stumped on that at the moment.

indeed. this isnt a breakthrough but its progress. i think that humanity will get to the surveying point eventually if we dont blow each other up first

I believe I've read that our telescopes will have sufficient resolving power to image planets in the next decade or two. However most of them will be space-based so it's all down to funding.

Funding's a bitch at the moment though. We need a competition... China need to do something overtly amazing in space, forcing the US and Europe to combine and conquer the Solar System, but like... letting the Chinese come anyway when everything's blown over.
