For whoever asked, lots of them are planted in the audience just the make the shows interesting and work as jokes in themselves. It's pretty common. Galifianakis does some of the best ones these days, and his angry outbursts are great. Every time I've seen him he's thrown random crazy little tantrums where he acts very snobbish and full of himself, then just goes on like nothing happened - funny stuff.

i really don't know how common it is to plant hecklers in the audience. maybe Zach does but most comics I know don't. the Brendon Burns one is obviously part of the show. seems like a hack move though, and most comics don't travel with professional hecklers.

Yeah it is looked down upon by some I'm sure, but it's around. I'm sure more are real than fake, I meant mostly the guys who have weekly spots at clubs. Sarah Silverman used to use a plant for some bits, but later he got pretty well known for playing one of the guys on her show.
