Yeah, it's off a movie called "Scratch." Great movie if you ever get a chance to watch it.

I only produce when I have something to say.
I almost never produce. People try to get me to work on stuff. I just don't want to.

Re: How to keep yourself interested?
Everyday I get frustrated at my lack of progress.
Every morning I decide I'll try again and continue.
Every now and again I make a breakthrough.
That's what keeps me going, those rare but beautiful moments when it all comes together.
If you aren't progressing, then there are several practical steps you can make.
1> Read tutorials in magazines, online and in books.
2> Watch tutorials on Youtube or magazine covermount DVDs.
3> Listen to inspirational interviews with other producers. A good place to start is the interviews with other dubstep producers on this forum.
4> Try and make a song with limits in place. This could be working with only three notes, only one synth, only three effects etc etc.
5> Make music with friends. Working with others allow you to enjoy the process as well as socialise while the tunes get knocked out.
6> Pay for studio time with an engineer. You come in with ideas, direct the engineer and walk out with the finished article!
7> Pay me to make your tunes. Generous rates available, starting at £100 per hour.
8> Review your work process and make changes to facilitate and speed up your workflow. Create templates for your DAW, arrange your physical and virtual workspace so that it is logical, comfortable and fast to use, get rid of any software you find hard to understand or ugly, arrange your samples and files into a decent filing system.
9> Understand your approach to constructing a new track, then change it if it feels stale.
10> Don't let money motivate you. If you want money, go into business not music. Music production requires certain traits. You need to love music, you need to want to produce better music than you already hear, you need to love using technology, you need to love learning/obsessing over aforementioned technology, you need to have patience, and you need to have the internal motivation to continue regardless of the stage you've reached.
11> Have fun, try to better yourself and help make the world a better place.

On a more serious note tho, you're absolutely right.
My tunes (I can't even call them tunes) are absolutely horrid now that I have some more knowledge.
I'm even close to taking them off of Soundcloud but I'm just letting them be where they are so I can see how I progress.
Whenever I'm at my computer I know I should work on my track but I just won't, just randomly that I open my reason file and change a bit, change another bit and close Reason again.
My track is taking ages to finish but I'm enjoying it every second that I'm working on it.
What gets me motivated the most is here, on DSF.
It's on my bookmarks and when I bored I just look around, open a thread and go like "hey that seems like a good idea" and there I go again.

There has been so much good stuff said in this thread it's crazy.
My take on it is that one day you will have a session that just oozes with inspiration and your song will almost write itself. Just don't let it get to your head because those days a few and far between.

Don't worry guys I am reading everything that comes through here. It all helps too which doesn't surprize me. What does surprize me is that I have gotten so many responses, Which shows that most of you guys were in the same position I was in. Which is very inspiring, it shows me this isn't something that is easy and the best are the best because they put the work into it. Each one of your points future_untold make sense, I think the money one was the most important, If I put it in my head that this is just a big hobby and that I don't have to rely on it makes things so much easier. Makes me go back to why I started in the first place, because I love music and I want to make music I like and then share that music with others.
That day for me was actually yesterday haha, I spat out so much and it was all by accident. Not today though.ninjadog wrote:There has been so much good stuff said in this thread it's crazy.

Here is my advice to everyone who is here looking for ways to help themselves. This is one of the things that has help me and I thought it might help you. A few weeks ago I tried out reason, I ended up liking it because of the synth tools in the program. Most all of the tools had exactly what I wanted in them and were easy to use. Then came placing those awesome sounds I just made together to make a song. That part never actually happened, because of the fact that placing anything on the timeline or attempting to do so just pissed me off. It was very time consuming and tedious which made me super frustrated. I kept on using reason hoping I would get better and hopefully would become more comfortable using it. I never did, so I switched back over to the good ol' noob friendly fl studio. It has the easiest to use piano roll ever made IMO. and one thing that I will admit about fl studio is how horrible the program deals with time signatures.
After switching back to fl studio I realized how much more fun I was having. If you are getting frustrated try switching to a different program, I'm sure there is no daw that is exactly the same. I guess what I am trying to say is, find the DAW for you.

Your chosen DAW(s) is like any other instrument, and requires a continuous relationship of learning and experience to create a familiarity to the point where you're not asking "how do i do this?" as much as "what should I do?". That's why it doesn't matter what DAW you use, if you enjoy it, are more familiar with it, etc. then that's all you need.
This, kindafutures_untold wrote: 4> Try and make a song with limits in place. This could be working with only three notes, only one synth, only three effects etc etc.
IMO, for learning purposes, making songs to fit a formula can be just as valuable as an in-depth tutorial. Especially when i'm lacking on inspiration, it has helped to familiarize myself if I build a track meant to be real simple and stereotypical.
For example, a real simple house song, with a deep kick on each beat, clap or a bright snare on 3, Hi Hat 16th notes all round, maybe automate the hi hat pattern to change every 8 bars. Then, add simple things that you hear all the time, a pad, a drone-y 2-3 note bass-line, etc. Or apply things you learn in tutorials; a juno synth, reese, compression (kind of mandatory for house), freq-sweeps, etc. By following a formula I eventually get a structured song, working faster and faster with a sort of momentum, using hotkeys to get around the interface quicker, and especially with the sequencer. Chances are that at some point you'll think of something original to do with one of the pieces of your tune. I've made leagues of progress with tunes like this.
You can apply that to any genre, too.
Those are the days I LIVE for!ninjadog wrote: There has been so much good stuff said in this thread it's crazy.

Re: How to keep yourself interested?
If you aren't interested then you should find something else to do. If you really want to make music but are getting bored, then get better speakers. Turn the volume UP. Make music like your favorite artists. do things that get your blood boiling.dMan wrote:I searched but couldn't find anything.
I am wondering how everyone keeps themselves interested enough to keep on producing everyday. I will mess with a song and its sounds for about an hour or so each day but then I get somewhat overwhelmed and bored. I see people saying ohhh yeah I spend about 5 hours everyday, making about a tune a day. That just blows my mind. Maybe the more knowledge and experience you have with the program the easier it is to produce for longer periods? I am pretty new to music production and I really really want to get better. If anyone has any advice please let me know. Thanks!

Re: How to keep yourself interested?
This is me! I desire nothing more than to make good beats, and there's inspiration coming from everywhere, too much. I'll hear an El-B tune and i'll spend 4 hours making a drum loop, then i'll listen to Flying Lotus and i'll want to make layers and layers and layers of sound. I think my problem is the same, too, i just get too overwhelmed, there's so many ways a song can go, i'm afraid to go a certain way in case i come up with another way, increasing the amount of work. It's like the polar opposite of writer's block.
i need to start making fruity loops a daily thing. but i'm having so much fun listening still...

simply do your own thing, make what you want. Follow what inspiration fits. Just like anything, don't get derailed.
Re: How to keep yourself interested?
But my own thing is getting derailed, wtf should I do???

lol. Go back to where it got derailed from, and re-work that back into place. Then grab more inspiration
