Three things:

The tempo. 140bpm is spot on. Before I heard dubstep (2005ish) I was bored of listening to really fast music like breakcore and jungle all the time. 140 works – it’s fast enough to be a bit rushy and ravey, but slow enough for a variety of mood / rhythm.

Its not really a “genre” in the sense of lots of people making the same music. The best people eg. Vex’d, Kode 9, Digital Mystikz, Scuba, Shackleton, Burial , Zomby, Skream etc sound less like each other than leading producers tend to in other genres. Obviously, there is generic dubstep…but it’s easily ignored because there’s plenty of other stuff to listen to.

Dubstep picks and chooses from at least 25 years of “dance” music. A lot of the best producers in dubstep have a broad-minded approach, so you can hear bits of 2-step, roots / dub, Berlin techno, UK hardcore / jungle, Chicago House etc…it’s all there. Drum & Bass (which I loved in the mid-90s) got very narrow after a few years of development, and if dubstep does that, I'll move on. Breadth is its strongest asset.
Hit that long lunar note and let it float ...

The fact if you like a song it is fairly likely 10 people will diss you for it, 10 people will praise you for it and 10 people wont have even heard it!!

I like the fact that I'm right and my friends are wrong.

Back then they were all "What's this crap?" and now they're all "Man, I've liked this shit forever dawg".

and.... I like how my ball hairs stand on end when they're exposed sub bass.
