Very good points being discussed in this thread.

threads like this are healthy

I chat with people who are upping tunes to their distro without mastering :u: so there is a quality control issue when it comes to some tunes.

perhaps the original poster listens to his dubstep on youtube and then I'll agree, those tunes sound like shit

but you cant really base your judgment on all dubstep until you have heard it on a big system anyway

maybe the O.P. doesn't go to shows to hear the music in it's proper environment

I dunno..

I would like to point out that no matter how much people(producers) bitch about the new wav of sound design in electronic music ie(huge synths compressed drums etc..) THOSE THINGS are what are huge and popular now to the generic masses. People love crazy synesthetic noises and the days of analog things such as drum machines or whatever are not only expensive but rapidly drawing to a close as the software is quickly clearing and has already cleared the performance gap in a lot of cases. If you cant deal with it I don't really care. I love my crazy noises.

and as stated in the post above. SUB and I mean fucking 35 hertz is the reason that dubstep is the way it is. There is nothing comparable to being blasted by it on a huge system! I crave it now like a crack addict and ever since the 150,000 watt system at shambhala I think I am a lifelong addict right now. ALL HAIL SUB! No wonder people who havn't heard/felt it on a huge system find it weird, simple and slow. Its all about the system.

hahaha, sometimes people tell me they don't like dubstep. 100% of these people have never heard it up close on a proper system.

you copy a sound to the clipboard, select another sound and press the little mix button on the top bar. Theres some options in there, volume of the clip board and the original etc, some other bits.

Im not sure if Id put Burial in the same box as Aphex Twin, hes worked with a lot of other people now and any of them who have mentioned methods say he used soundforge.
Fair play. Been using sf for 12 years never knew you could do that lol. In my defense I never needed sf to do that.

@kaiori can't properly reply to you as I am on phone but will get you later. I have never claimed to be objective tho. I speak for myself strictly. I don't think you are being objective either but there is nothing wrong with that IMO. I don't think it's a right or wrong thing, it is opinions being shared. Will go into more detail when I am on pc.

@ op

come on,

hardware can sound like shit too. i promise.

bottom line is : if u know what you are doing, its gonna sound good.

you would be a 100% unable to guess which tools were used in some of the best compositions of today.

im a hip hop producer, basically, and we had the guessing game numerous times... this subject is overrated... hardware is fantastic, but only if ur a fantastic musician... which brings it down to a question of preference...

by the time ur moog makes that much of a difference, ur digital mixes will sound as good and as cohesive as anything u could produce on ur moms tape deck.

and dont mix up youtube with dubstep please

Then do what I did, didn't like what other people were making that much so I made my own, if you don't like the sound quality of music what is around then do it yourself and shut the fark up like many other people have.

You're obviously listening to the wrong kind of music and have way to much sand in your vagina!

I didn't mean it in a degrading way, I totally respect hardware synths and their signature sounds. Same with talented DJ's

hehe, I only worked it out the other day myself. I wanted to invert a horrible bend off the zero point in a sound and mix it back in to cancell it out, thankfully I stumbled on the option pretty quickly, random stoned luck. I could have been there all night. Ive been using that program for an age, its not something Id ever needed to use it for before, and why anyone would chose to make music in soundforge is beyond me

IME, the bad-sounding tunes I hear out are, 99% of the time, also poorly written.

quality is quality and shite is shite.

Analog is just a tool to be used for a certain sound, and that sound changes with each synthesizer you use.

There are some amazing producers on this forum getting astounding results using digital synthesizers.etc. and some of our favourites are using nothing but software. It's not what you use, it's how you use it.

The biggest difference between analogue and digital isn't purely in the sounds either can produce anymore. I've found with analogue outboard there's a completely different approach to making music when you have instant tactile feedback from knobs and faders and are relying on your ears as opposed to staring at a screen and clicking a mouse. It's not better or worse, just different.

If you are using a DAW these days though, you are always gonna be clicking at some point in the production process so...
