Incredibly bleak, yet distressingly true.rob sparx wrote:Aside from the fact thats its a lot easier to make noise than write actual music there is the uncomfortable reality that you could be the best deep producer out there however it don't mean shit bcos if your trying to write purist bcos with that music ITS NOT ABOUT HOW GOOD YOU ARE ITS ABOUT WHO YOU KNOW. That saying could go for any kinds of music but its a lot more relevant with the purist side of the scene. A new dubstep producer without any links etc has the choice of writing deep and getting nowhere or writing jumpup and having a chance of actually getting noticed, theres also risks with writing both as any hint of "fraternising with the enemy" can ruin your chances or getting a release on a decent purist label. Ok there's a few exceptions to this but anyone actually involved in production for any length of time knows there are a lot more open doors with livlier styles of dubstep than there are with the purist sound - that goes for dealing with labels and distributors.sub-tropical wrote:why cant people stop fucking it up for us with the "chainsaw" sound or whatever
Ppl can say what they like about writing music you like without any consideration for anyone else but most producers like both sounds so will more often choose the livlier styles as they its a lot easier to get ahead with that sound
Word of warning to those who think that helping out their friends with the right links will get them ahead need to think really hard about whether they can actually trust that person or not as this game is full of snakes and from what ive heard it only gets worse the more ladders you climb!

I got well carried away with regards to that last sentence recently (apologies my bad!) sure I had my reasons for it but better to have it out in private than blow things out of all proportion kicking off on a public forum sure no-one expects any less from me thoughushushnz wrote:Incredibly bleak, yet distressingly true.rob sparx wrote:Aside from the fact thats its a lot easier to make noise than write actual music there is the uncomfortable reality that you could be the best deep producer out there however it don't mean shit bcos if your trying to write purist bcos with that music ITS NOT ABOUT HOW GOOD YOU ARE ITS ABOUT WHO YOU KNOW. I'm not saying there isn't plenty of good deep music out there still of course there is (extra special shout to Cyrus who's sounding sicker than ever!) im just explaining the reason there's proportionally less of it compared to the scene as a whole than there used to be. Gonna try to keep schtum in future as ive got way too involved in the moaning on here and don't want ppl thinking im bitter as plenty of good things happening atm im just not too impressed with some of the DNB style politics in this scene (and im far from talking about my own experiences) but chatting about it won't change anything

i think some of you got way i sed wrong its not that the new style is shit its just "back in the day" there was a lot more quality tunes coming out on a regular like im probibily just a lazy pot head thats stuck in the past
Re: what went wrong????????????
i know exactly what your saying. i think the vast majority of people in this thread are missing the point.sub-tropical wrote:i think some of you got way i sed wrong its not that the new style is shit its just "back in the day" there was a lot more quality tunes coming out on a regular like im probibily just a lazy pot head thats stuck in the past
Listen to last weeks Youngsta set on rinse, old skool 04 - 06 vibes, then tell me that tunes like that are still being released today. That sound has been lost the same way ragga jungle has been lost. I, like the OP, think thats a shame.
Re: what went wrong????????????
this sounds like back in the days (whithout the myspace voice though
). killer tune!

some would say that what makes the music of both of those time periods special is their brevity. If it had continued down the same path for a decade it would have gotten stale... now it is at a point where it is special to hear tunes like that. remember when we first started getting into this, the idea was to always push fwd>> with the sound. that's all that's happened. i love the past, but the present is pretty rockin imhowooda916 wrote:i know exactly what your saying. i think the vast majority of people in this thread are missing the point.sub-tropical wrote:i think some of you got way i sed wrong its not that the new style is shit its just "back in the day" there was a lot more quality tunes coming out on a regular like im probibily just a lazy pot head thats stuck in the past

I see what your saying here and in normal circumstances this would be bang on. The thing is with the sound at the time being so free and expressive, it's kind of hard to imagine how it could become stale when there is no boundaries for restriction. I also think for a lot of people, they got in to dubstep just after this time and never really got a chance to experience some of these classics on a rig. With all the guidelines pretty much set at the moment, i don't think anyone will be brave enough to embark on a revival of sorts and be successful, unless they have the status of being a well reputed recognised artist. So if anyone is coming up in the future to try and get involved with the scene, they are not going to attempt it do it using an approach that is possibly considered out of date. They will look at what is successful now and what the demands of the market are.fractal wrote:some would say that what makes the music of both of those time periods special is their brevity. like skream said, there was only so far he could go with just beats and bass. i love that rolling techy dark sound of his old tracks like his first few releases and stuff a la dubstep allstars vol 1 and i love the youngsta half step stuff like in allstars 2, but i wouldn't say things aren't as good as they were back then and there's lots of diversity. that said, i wouldn't mind producers revisiting that early sound when there wasn't really a formula of anything and when dubstep was just a loose term

i feel ya. i think that for me, instead of any sort of revival, the way i will be keeping the tunes that i love, from that period, alive is by using them still... in bok bok's xlr8r mix he drops D1's ET in the middle of some of the most fwd thinking dancefloor music and the effect is amazing... i feel like we are again at that point in time when the boundaries have all but disappeared... maybe not in terms of a market or anything like that, but definitely on my ipod and the dancefloor!rogue star wrote:I see what your saying here and in normal circumstances this would be bang on. Re: what went wrong????????????
i think theyre still there, just far better produced now days. Hybrid by km is a fine example of spooky airs and whispers, jawshuddering subs and spacious beats, it doesnt sound exactly like 04 to 06 material in the same way Timeless by Goldie doesnt sound exactly like Trip II The Moon or Music In Search Of Light, times move on and slightly amature production gives way to flawless masterpieces but the spirit is still there, people just got better (imo imo, of course). The oldschool shinanigans on Youngstas show the other week were pretty cool, but he throws down that vibe every week, its just the new stuff is a lot richer, more refined version of the sound. Thats how I feel anyway. Someone mentioned ragga jungle, people mourned the death of proper dark hardcore after a brief spell of it around 92/93 that gave way to outrageous jump up ragga jungle that the darkcore heads wernt feeling, but that vibe was still present for many years after, bubbling away in the background, it was far better exicuted and hence did sound different, but the hardcore spirit lived on in elements of jungle for a while there. We look back at that 94 to 96 period now and call it the golden age, and people like me who smoke too many spliffs and sit around all day cussing modern dnb hark on about that time period endlessly. I feel we are in that zone right now, where the sound has been mastered to a sick level and I cant help but feel we should be spending our time listening to the great stuff thats around atm and completely blanking the kiddy tune element out of our awareness. In 1994/1995 I was listening to loads of ragga jungle and I look back now and realise I was on the wrong tip back then and I missed a lot of stuff in those years that was truely magical. I for one dont wanna make that mistake again and find myself digging back 5 years into the past just to float my boat.
But thats just me, dont get me twisted, I do feel the pain of the beardstrokers, I hear where you guys are coming from and I respect it, its just for my tastes dubstep has got a whole lot more appealing since Ive stopped listening to it almost altogether and now only check what Youngstas up to. I dont want to know the tunes hes playing by name, or who made them, and I dont want to hear some kiddy hype shit thats going to water down my appreciation of the sound, Im just locked in to nameless hours of dark, moody bass and that gives me the excitment I used to get blasting tapepacks full of uknown tunes back in my stomping days.
Each to their own init, musics a personal thing and we each have our own take on it.

Re: what went wrong????????????
the guy above me is right its all personal prefrence i wasnt around for jungle but in a way dubstep is my jungle i rember when it was a strictly underground sound and thats how i liked it you told people you listned to dubstep and they where like "WAH" didnt have a clue accept the enlightend few and then it sort of poped its head out of the underground and is slowly getting worse its ok at the moment but where from here????????????not lookin good if you ask me its a shame but its true
Re: what went wrong????????????
Great beats and chest caving bass, all day long from where I sit!
Guess that's probably because I don't care if my music is "underground" or not...
