not bad at all, should have more variation imo but what I miss about this kind of production, is some lack of weight and pressure, dunno how to put it differently.

Re: Deadmau5 - Raise your Weapons. Mau5step.
I started listening to Deadmau5 at about the same time I first heard dubstep (back in 2007). Joel is, imho, one of the best most brilliant composers of electronic music in the world. The diversity he has in his music, from mainstream trancey/progressive house, to the far reaches of minimal and techno is astounding. There aren't any producers like him that have the kind of elasticity in their sound to be capable of putting out so many tracks in so many genres (with the exception of Skream and a few others maybe [debatable]).
That being said, Deadmau5's dubstep productions don't resonate with me in the same way his other music does. I think they are well produced and have potential, and if he dedicated a lot of time to making dubstep he could churn out some really interesting next level tracks. Take this one for example.
Soundcloud
It has some interesting percussion and ambiance in the breakdown that I dig a lot. I'd like to hear more frequencies in the subsonic range (the lack of which is probably a side effect of his heavy house influence where bass does not ride beneath the kick), but it has potential. However, I heard the finished song of this live at Chicago a few weeks back, and it was just too long and monotonous.
Raise Your Weapon is quite an interesting concept to me, but again it's too long. I'd cut the length in half honestly. Dubstep doesn't hold up to long repetitive phrases that repeat over and over like in tech-house or trance. It just has a different flow, and making a 9-10 minute dubstep track will not be interesting if you're using the whole "maximal bro-step-esque" sound. Also, after every 32 beats, the instrumental just repeats itself after the drop of this song. I'd like to see more attention to detail, it doesn't feel like Joel spent as much time on this track as he's spent on a lot of his others.

don't give a shit about that drop - sounds like something from 2008 or something. Or what Rusko and Caspa play. Real dubstep is Youngsta on thursdays
Re: Deadmau5 - Raise your Weapons. Mau5step.
I like Deamau5, but not this. Seems like he needs a little more time to refine his sound, so I'll stay open minded about future tracks.

Re: Deadmau5 - Raise your Weapons. Mau5step.
To be quite honest I find it very amusing that people who rate music from COMPLETELY GARBAGE artists like Mt Kimbie come on here and say this music sucks.
The number of truly talented musicians who are making dubstep today number less than 20. This genre of music has the worst signal-to-noise ratio of any kind of music I have ever liked. It makes it incredibly frustrating. Fuck, even the truly good artists like Skream wallow in their own filth and release tired bullshit with alarming frequency.
So yes, this Deadmau5 tune blows but technically I'd rate it better than most of the twat-toss you lot post to this forum on a regular basis.

It's a marked improvements on previous attempts of his. I'd buy a digital single.

Never said it was bad, just that it's not as good or thought out as a lot of his house tracks. He's improving though.Phase Down wrote:I personally think that song is sick.illandnatti wrote:I started listening to Deadmau5 at about the same time I first heard dubstep (back in 2007). I like it, guess I'm wrong, I wonder what it's like to hate everything that doesn't pander to a narrow taste.

They burn with rage whenever something they don't like gathers a sizeable following, and decry it with fervour in these forums. But ultimately the joke's on them; the people targeted in these condescending lashings aren't wandering internet forums aimlessly, seeking validation from "experienced dubstep enthusiasts", they're out spending mad bank to go see their favourite artists in concert, where they promptly lose their bananas and have a great time with their friends. Meanwhile, the grumpy dubstep purist sits at home on the weekends, taking breaks from censuring the internet to play selections from his catalogue on his headphones and brood.
Tell me which of the two lifestyles I've described sound more likely to produce an individual who's happy, healthy, and overall well-calibrated.

Wow, well aren't you an 'expert' on reading people. Personally I disliked the tune, and not because I'm some 'purist' - the sound simply didn't appeal to me. Taste is subjective, everyone on here should already know this instead of bitching about it and calling others 'purists' and some other idiotic bullshit you can come up with. And everyone has the right to expressing their thoughts as well. I get a kick when someone writes about something they don't like and then you have a joker come on and say "Ohhh...then why are you posting if you don't liiiiike it" Seriously, like babies.WatchYourStep wrote:I don't want to find out. P.S. Huge misconception on the whole going out bit. I find it funny how you can write something like that. It's like, those people who don't like something are automatically losers who have no social life or something. Just pure idiocy.

I think what most people are sick of is the exact same song from 2006 being made over and over again with slight variations in the LFO. It's not that we hate on this or that or have a narrow taste in music, in fact quite the opposite. I listen to everything from country to jazz to jungle to pop and beyond. With tracks like these tho, it's really just a shame because we all know deadmau5 is capable of so much more. It seems like they took the same formulaic approach as most mediocore producers new to the sound and it's kind of a let down is all. Dubstep can be anything, it doesn't have to be one type of song, over and over and over again
