Starting a song is always the hardest part...

Heres my method;

Write a pretty little melody
Pads & ting
Drums
Realise melody is stupid, delete it
Turn tune into ominous drone/shackleton esque piece
Delete
Attempt to recreate original melody
Fail
Cry
Wank
Sleep

I know this whole process all too well

I usually try to hunt down a good/funny/weird sample to write my tunes around. Once I find a good sample or hook it starts pouring out.

When I'm starting a track I just make up a rhythm in my head and start to assign notes to it, from there I'll lay down a pad, then enter with the beat, and then finally a big lead all leading up to a drop.

Usually I'll make a start on a track then i do the 24 hours test, gay name I know. I leave it a day, then i come back to the tune and if im still feeling it i finish it, i find that my tunes become somewhat more interesting because im in a different and fresher mindset when i come back to it so id add things i wouldnt have added when i started because im thinking more clearly.

IMO the Drop i the hardest, mainly because if you fuck it up its ruins the tune.

I get moments where I'm able to start a track and finish most of it the same day, other times I create 1 minute loops of just noise. One piece of advice I would give is just make music for yourself first and foremost, don't force yourself to make music for a certain crowd and certainly don't force yourself to create a track if you don't feel like it.

Good thing for me atm is that I've be able to finish off two tracks just this week and I'm gonna be finishing off another one tomorrow after work.

Yeah, sometimes I have a hard to getting the ball rolling, sometimes it a matter of being to lazy to start expanding on a loop I've made or what I have on the screen isn't very inspiring so I don't really want to go on, but usually if I do whatever I make will at least tune out alright and completely change directions, but some of them are simply a lost cause.

I usually start with drums, and if the drums don't turn out well, I close out my DAW, and most likely not touch it for the rest of the day, unless ideas / inspiration hits.

But I think finishing the song can be hard at times, because you start disliking the melody, and lose the feel for the song that you had when you first started it, that's when I start something new, because if you come back to the project later, you have a fresh mind, and better ideas.

Otherwise, everything is a breeze, a lot of the time when the drums come out nice, and I have a nice plan in my head, I can finish most of the track on day 1.

Edit: Also, If the track isn't working AT ALL, within about 15 minutes, I just scrap it.

And, I like to imagine if I would listen to the track myself, blasting it away on my iPod.. But you always think about what other people will think.

Totally, it is really hard to shake off thinking about what a homie will think of it but if u can write a song start to finish without think about if anyone else will be into more power to ya.
