Thats the problem I've always had with (sigh) IDM. I have some of his older stuff and really like it, and I was expecting an absolutely wicked live show, but when you're standing there and he's bashing this shit out, there's no point in saying "well, it took him several years programming this". Its like, well WHY?
I'm not saying he ain't talented (he wouldn't be signed to µ otherwise), but when the amount of work going into a piece of music isn't reflected in the end product, I see it as a waste of time.
Ha ha, yeah, some of that album is pretty dark, but is really badly cut. It didn't help that a few years back Blackdown wandered into my room and dropped a lightbulb onto the record while it was playing. too right. or perhaps that should say ''music you like and music you don't''...Too right there is only good music and bad... and mu put out a bit of both it seems
i'm a huge fan of the label and have been since 'tango n vectif' by mu-ziq, but that doesn't mean i pick up everything they put out. apart from the fact that mu's gotta pretty prolific release schedule so it would be damn expensive, some of it simply ain't to my taste.
you just can't sum up a label with so many releases by so many diverse artists that's been in it for the long haul with a simple 'good' or 'bad' 'cos that's one huge and varied body of work. the fact that they're reppin some dubstep stuff shouldn't be seen as cynical on their part either- they've always been into exploring new electronic sounds.

One thing you could never say about the label is that it’s static. Every couple of months something really surprising pops out on it. It’s one of the few long-running labels that I’ll always check. Mike P’s Tango and Vectif stuff ruled back in the day, and still sounds pretty fresh to me.
As for Exile, his music far transcends chopped-up amens and shouting, though I do know a few folk who have that opinion having caught him at breakcore/mashup nights. Check his ep on Mosquito – a mash of house, splattered electro, jungle and god-knows-what. Absolute quality.

Planet Mu is pretty solid. I enjoy most of their output. when you are talking enjoyment of sound, you are talking about something so fucking objective. To me, even the most chaotic sounds are.....interesting, at the very least. I am one of those guys who just listens, to what ever, like for instance right now, the keyboard, and the person typing beside me, and the person who just pushed in the chair behind me. thats just noise. so it 'music'. there really is no difference, other than the way in which it is heard and interpreted. To some, the warped sounds coming out of some labels sounds like chimps let loose in the studio. very well. thats all good and fine. but i am sure to my mom, even the most gentle d'n'b sounds like that too, at least to her.

i have to say i like mu, i originally liked breakcore before i got into dubstep, and mus promotion of pinch, vexd, markone etc got my attention. and if dubstep fans start listening to work in 11/16 occasionally, then all the better.
