how about this vision: fighting is only the physical manifestation of what is going on between people at every time; it's ok to hit some one psychologically but not physically?

Yeh, I saw a friend killed outside a night club because someone decided to "settle their disagreements".

He was punched, fell over and head cracked open on a curb.

Justify this.
okay then how about a teenager with mental issues, bullied at school without doing any physical damage whatsoever, one day decides to hang himself because he/she can no longer take it....

Teen suicide rates are high man. don't know the exact numbers but we talked about it in class the other day and it was much higher than anyone thought..

we should compare the numbers of people who die in a fight and people who do suicide because of people treating each other like shit

i think we would be surprised!

Thats a valid point actually.

My little brother was gettin bullied to some extent at school from some cheeky loud-mouthed prick for ages. Eventually one lunchtime he just snapped and gave the guy the hiding of his life. Was apparently one of the worst doings the headmaster at the time had ever witnessed.

Although violence is quite often not the answer it put an end to the torment, earned him some level of respect amongst his peers and the boy never gave him or anyone else shit from that day on.

Brother was quite remorseful but the way I see it is he had it coming and was gonna get it from someone eventually and i'm glad it came from my brother cos it was a release from it all from him. As a non-violent and quite introverted type theres every chance he could have kept it bottled up and things may not have turned out so well.

Funnily enough the boy in question now works at my work and since day one everyone says he a fucking bellend. Arrogant as fuck. Kinda interesting to know the guy that bullied my brother and see how weak an individual he really is

thats not really the point though, people werent bringing up words as a form of attack, more as a form of defense, i.e. you should try and talk your way out of confrontational situations and resolve disputes verbally rather than encourage and even instigate physical confrontation.

of course words can do bad things to people, but that doesnt mean fighting is better by comparison

A lad who was at school with my Dad got bullied mercilessly by some guy for years. One day in one of the workshops the kid just snapped and slashes the bully right across the face with a craft knife.

Apparently the guy who got bullied was a pretty calm, laid back guy. It's a horrible thought that this bloke made his life such a misery that he felt he had to resort to that.

If youre going to bring up suicide and bullying then you need to bring up the whole social morals we have as a society and the systems we put in place to stop these from happening.

Not trying to undermine what the above poster's brother had done, but if the system was working correctly all he would have to do is talk to his teacher who would stop the bullying - and society wouldnt shun him for "appearing" weak beacuse of it. In an ideal situation this would be the proper way of getting somthing done.

However the issue is the system has failed a long time ago. People are taught from an early age violence is a good way to solve things (whether we like to admit that or not - just look a kids toys- action man? we seriously give out kids this shit?). Then on top of that the school system has failed because they failed to protect the poor dude getting bullied in the first place, thus things resolved to the lowist common understood form of communication, and the cock got his ass handed to him.

yeh, in that instance it worked really well. But i bet for every instance someone being beating up ended up with a positive outcome theres a shitton of instances where someones life was ruined because of a fight.

Then before we know it we're on another completely different topic about social ethics and shit.

well yeah, this idea just got triggered after reading "fighting is for dumbasses".. because i think it is hippocratic if someone says he doesn't fight but doesn't talk about all those awful things he said to other people that can really hurt or even help leading towards a dramatic ending.. I was just thinking that those people should think about and realize this.

but yeah nothing good about fighting. Only good for sport or self-defense, and then again you should always try to master the situation without bashing some one's head to pulp i think..

Sorry. I couldn't resist.

I don't see why you guys are talking about physical and verbal as two seperate things. Violence is an act of aggression. It can be either.

I think the kids are going to be alright. Despite my drunken comments about rudebwoy mates of mine responding to a certain troll, I'm glad to see that so many people are against violence. I am a pretty peaceful person myself (most of the time). I once got beat up in high school by some fuck for something that I wasn't even responsible for (residual anger there I think), I would definitely never wish that on anyone. I'm more of an artist/musician type with no self defense skills so I had no other recourse than to get the shit kicked out of me. I think some self defense training might be good, but I've usually relied on my intuition to feel out bad vibes before they escalate, and to get the fuck out of the way or leave.

learning self defense/martial arts is great for character and eastern philosophy wise if you ask me
controlled sports fighting is great too
it's irl when you don't wanna participate is when i have a problem
i'm that kinda guy that carries a knife but doesn't use it unless extreme circumstances
if people choose to get violet and i can use breakfalls and defense i do till they go away
if it escalates is when i go to action
if that makes sense
being a pacifist is hard
