My mixing tends to be quite... schizophrenic i.e. drifting from deeper stuff to heavier, more 'brostep' style and everything in between... not quite sure how I would condense and convey that into 10 minutes, but I'll have a pop for sure!

Fair enough, I must stress then that this competition is about tune selection AND mixing skill.

I'm trying to make it as open as possible so anyone can join in, but obviously there is a certain level of skill you are going to need to be at to win.

This competition is a bit of a laugh, so that we can choose who we listen to and enjoy on the night and I've tried to do it in a fair a way as possible. Also bear in mind at the end of the day, you guys are going to be the ones casting the votes.

It's more about people on the forum meeting up and having a laugh than some super cereal ninja warrior style survival of the fittest competition.

...@stereotactic: that sounds quite a lot like how I mix, do you not jump relatively quickly from tune to tune then? I (roughly) get two minutes out of a mixed tune, meaning that I could get four or 5 tunes into the 10 mins.

TBH, that's what I'll be aiming for.

True. When I got some tracks together I thought to myself, this is new, what can I do in 10 mins? I normally try to do long tight mixes so should I change my style? should I do a record a min or stick to what I normally do when I play out?

I just stuck to my normal style in the end using some new 12s I just got...
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

Is that really a good strategy when your trying to book DJs for a night though?

Soooo important to be able to properly mix if your gonna get on a stage, of course selection is #1 priority, but flow is an even tie IMO.

Seriously, wish I was in the UK, Id enter this shit.
Agreed.

I think it might also be worth mentioning what tools people used to put the tracks together. I mean, a monkey could put some mp3s in order using the latest software. Some people may prefer to hear someone mixing with their hands and ears without computer help....

Is it a race to see how fast you can pull a record out of the sleeve and into the mix? my average for an hour mix is 23 records. It must have something do with the number of bars/tempo because without trying I get 23 records in an hour 90% of the time, weird.

I wonder how many people will be racing thru tracks and dropping them in/out (possibly out of structure) to see how many tracks they can fit into 10 mins…

Or prewarping like 20 on Ableton and just layering over and over and over...

Haha, I am curious to see what people will do with it.
But its not to say that you can't have decent structure and mix quickly.

True. But there are still rules (yes I said rules!) how to mix two records together. You can put them in at any time once beat matched and it sounds 'ok'. Or you can wait for the right moment to bring the track in at the correct bars. So if you want to mix proper you have to wait for that moment if you want it to sound pro.

Its not hard to throw a record in and have two records play for 10 seconds before its out again. But it will sound rushed and amateur imo.

No but if you take into account standard dubstep structure, you have roughly 32 bar intro 64 bar drop 16/32bar break 64 bar drop, you can have one intro tune and double drop another four in 10 minutes.
You might have to fade out of the break in the last tune but thats pretty professional...

Yeh that’s cool. I was on about people who mix faster and ignore bar structure. 4/5 tracks is about right for 10 mins. If I do 23 in an hour that works out at playing each record for 2.5 mins.

Yeah, unless you are doing a maaaadd tech dmc style cut and paste jobby that would the most you could comfortably get in that amount of time.

if we get a better mix down before the deadline, can we delete our last one and use the other one? haha... the one i sent in was pretty old and doesn't necessarily resemble what we'd be playing if we got a slot (not that we could show you everything we'd be playing in a 10minute mix because our mix would progress) but yeah, will that be alright?

I got a lot of love for Rossi and Luca but they have those records marked up (standard for scratchers) and have played them a million times! what they are doing there is not that impressive tbh.

There's a lot of kids on the midrange thing now days for sure. Obviously people like Jakes, Komonazmuk, Eddie K have been doing it for a while. They do what they do well, not really for me.
