Re: Louis Theroux - America's Most Hated Family in Crisis
just watched this after it came up on youtube...
not quite as good as his first round with them, but still great. actually it was just depressing to see them still clinging to stupidity.

Not stupidity. These people are seemingly, reasonably intelligent but chose to interpret a book in a very narrow minded and mostly far fetched way.knell wrote:just watched this after it came up on youtube...

I think after watching it again there was a hint of the fact that some of the individuals had been prepared for Louis. They seemed to be far more guarded and aware of his approaches during topic raised in conversations. He has a knack for being able to disarm people, to get them to open up. But on his return for this show, it wasn't going to be as easy for him to extract ideas or information from them.

you're right, they're not stupid, just twisted. i blame the patriarch/matriarch brainwashingdrokkr wrote: These people are seemingly, reasonably intelligent but chose to interpret a book in a very narrow minded and mostly far fetched way.
EDIT: actually, now that i have a couple beers in me, i've gotta say that if you're smart enough to become lawyers and debate in public, and yet still stick to their unabashedly disgusting dogma, thinking they are told by God to damn 99.999999% of his creation.... that's pretty stupid, in my book.
unless they are just trolls, in that case they're pretty genius

Ohhhh okay I just watched a preview and can pretty much tell what this is about.cityzen wrote:Yeah I watched this. A bit messed up but it's just their interpretation of the bible. Would like King Ghost's input on this.
That church has taken one or two verses of scripture and turned it into a very small, inbred following. Last I checked there were only about 50 real members of his church, most of which are related to him. They're weirdos. One of the coolest parts of freedom of speech is that everyone can see how much of a moron you are.
Yes, the Bible says pretty plainly homosexuality is a sin, but it also says MANY MORE times very plainly that to judge another person is a sin. A sin that is capital over all others, because when you judge, you try to take the place of God, and in a sense become an idolater of your own judgments. God's response to Job at the end of the book of Job pretty much sums up God's position on how man feels or thinks about things. We weren't there for the formation of the universe and then the world, so who are we to assume judgement over anyone? Basically it boils down to realizing that a certain action might be a sin, but you can do this without judging or condemning anyone. Judgement is God's duty, and we cannot say. This is the stance of a true Christian, according to scripture.
On the topic of human suffering and rejoicing over it: That is also wrong, according to scripture. You don't need to be a Bible scholar to understand that God does not want you to be happy in someone else's misery. "So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired." Romans 1:24. You can take from this that God lets people do sinful things in the world because otherwise, how would he know who is doing the right thing for the right reasons, and who is doing it because they are being controlled by God?
Basically my thoughts are this... if God wants us to live our lives in a way that honors God (and according to scripture He does), how does spewing hate and poison words do that? It doesn't, it dishonors God in the worst way.

Thanks for the feed back KG. Would I be correct in thinking that these people would be considered pharisees, or is that a name specifically for that Jewish sect?
Your penultimate paragraph is a bit confusing. Are they not just rejoicing in God's work? If God's will causes human suffering, shouldn't that be praised?

Hm... you're being so calm and polite I feel like this is a set up...
At the time the pharisees in the gospel of Jesus were around, they were a Jewish group of course... but in modern times the term basically means anyone who attempts to adhere to CERTAIN laws in such a literal way that they miss the big picture.
BTW this is my church http://www.elevationchurch.org - I am no expert on the Bible, but - you can check out some of the sermons on the site if you want to see some honorable and HONORING words from a respectable man of God and an expert on the scripture (my pastor).

Again here we have another instance of a "right" idea gone completely wrong. When they (Westboro) say those things, they are doing it to further their own agenda... not God's agenda.

Re: Louis Theroux - America's Most Hated Family in Crisis
Actually by coincidence (or not?
) we had a guest pastor this weekend and he spoke three sermons, two of which are on the topic of God being in control and why people go through trials:
http://www.elevationchurch.org/sermons/ ... ants/part4
http://www.elevationchurch.org/sermons/ ... ants/part5
Long views but he can speak much better than I.
