Firstly,

Big up $hy for starting another valid topic and not just a mid range / bassweight debate!! lol

As for "the new Skool" heads not having any physical music, its a big shame!!

But it goes back to the facts of record shop culture. I have been buying records for over 10 years now and dont think i will stop until Vinyl stops being pressed!!

But it used to be a weekly thing on friday/saturday for me and all my pals to go to the record shop and spend hours in there listening to everything new that had come in since the week before!! Due to the internet and digital sites this is a rarety for most DJ's now days!!

I use Serato for all of my sets due to the fact of cutting all the dubs i get sent these days would just not happen!!

Long live the vinyl buyer/DJ's, But dont automatically assume that a Serato user doesnt know about Roots or they are "cheating"!!

My vinyl collection would put alot of people to shame and i can mix vinyl as well as any mix i do on Serato, its just cost!! :o

BIG O

I dont usually comment on Threads like this but..
This Topic Smacks of Vinyl Elitism.

"I have X amount of vinyl and you guys that use cd's or buy mp3's are foolish" basically sums up the last couple of posts.
"I like to have a physical copy of my music" And a wallet full of Cds containing wavs isnt just that?
Personally I dont download much, just the stuff i like, which in turn gets burnt to disc and then backed up.

So what will i have in 10 years? a shit load of hand picked music on cd, and the same music backed up on a flash drive.

I love vinyl, its great but at the same time i dont need to wank my musical ego about owning it.

vinyl, cd, mp3/wav its all music at the end of the day.

This si a BIG problem for me personally and only due to the fact over the years I've smoked so much of the good stuff that my memory is shot, tring to find tunes on my laptop is a real killer!
yep for me too that is THE problem... my mp3 are tidy and tagged, but when i seek for a tracks i always remember the artist but never the song name, i think that because i have a visual memory.. it's was really easier with vynil picture..
Can you imagine in 50years time sitting with your grand kids and uttering the words..... i remember the day i downloaded that song...!
do you imagine in 50 years your grand kids will care about todays music ;) ?

i really don't know where you're getting that from tbh

people get so defensive and start spouting stupid arguments like this. someone doesn't like skrillex so they're an elitist... they don't like mp3s so they're an elitist... people want wavs over mp3 so they're an elitist... my dad's bigger than yours so i'm an elitist..... bla bla bla bla bla bla

maybe people just like different things? :u:

so fucking boring seeing virtually every decent discussion boiling down to elitist vs hater arguments

LOL Nuff said!

Blessings Big O! Hope ya well buddie!

I think the thread is going a bit off topic, I'm not chatting about whats better, how cool you are for having a record or any other bullshit!

All I was saying is what will happen in 10 years from now cos most of the music we buy these days will be lost or on someones hard drive! I mean say jump forward 20-30-40 years... Where will all the music thats bought today go if its not physical? Ya telling me you'll be backing up files all your life?!

This is the exact reason why I have 3 x 1210s and Serato. Serato and vinyl combined.

I love the feel of vinyl and the thought of owning some of my favourite tunes in a physical format (face it, CD's are shit) - so I buy vinyl.

I don't blog or anything, I take in music suggestions from mates and apart from that my music taste throughout the past 3 years has grown from record shops/record hunting.
Mixing with your two hands is fun too. But the fact is, it's a cliche but, record shop visits and digging are a way of life, getting to know ya local record dealer, chatting to regular patrons, "of if you like that you'll LOVE this!" that great feeling when you see a name and label you recognise in the pile! (Stones Throw, Deep Medi, DMZ and whatever)

Fair enough to digital djs though, just like records is all! :)

^ makes me sad that ive never bought anything from a record store before. theres nothing around here that i know of (not that ive really looked) but for me its just much more convienient to shop at Chemical rec/DNR with next day delivery.
would love to have a local record shop though

Serato is amazing for being able to combine the too. I spend about an equal amount on vinyl and wavs but obviously end up with a lot more digi tunes each month. I get all special releases and tunes i'm likely to dj on wax. having a nice collection on vinyl is the shit tho, wouldn't swap it for the world! Taking a walk through memory lane with your collection is amazing, finding old gems you have semi forgotten about bit gutted i didnt have the foresight to take care of my records properly when I was younger, fair few sick dnb white labels with hefty scratches in :( . good thread @ $hy!

I almost cant remember going to record shops these days! I popped into BM the other month when I was in London but apart from that its all online now and yer it is sad tbh, soon to become a thing of the past! Different for me I guess, lived just up the road from Big Apple, was there every weekend n worked just down the road from BM although back then I believe it was still blackmarket! Met so many heads through standing around them shops tho!

Yeah, why not? I don't see why you have such a problem with this. I'd definitely be happier carrying around a backup usb drive than I would shifting a metric shitload of vinyl every time I move house (although I do still do that).

The mechanism might change (so I might start doing online backups to a couple of separate services or whatever when that becomes cheaper and more convenient) and the format might change (hence buying DRMed stuff is a bad idea) - although getting something that'll decode current wav formats in 40 years is probably going to be easier and cheaper than getting something that'll pay vinyl, since one is just a bit of software while the other actually needs working decks.

Leeds and Manchester are not that far from Sheffield, at all. I take trips up to BM specifically a few times a year just because the experience and the day out with a few mates is worth it!

This is why I have a brand new unboxed pair of 1210's in my loft! Personally I'd much rather shift through my records any day over looking at my hard drive but yeah I totally get what your saying, the medium will be around - you can back it up and you will be able to convert to whatever format comes in the future but for me I'd still rather have a record but its personal preference! I'm not trying to be a snob about it just I know that my records will stay as records in 50 years time, all I have to do is move them around! God only knows what will come from MP3's n I dont know about you but I've got thousands of MP3's already, funk having to convert them when the time comes...

How can you not see it? The title of the thread is provocative in itself.
Im not being totally defensive, i just personaly think the thread stinks of the notion that if you have vinyl somehow you love music more or generally are more part of the scene than others and that if you have Mp3's of the same music its not the same
Celebrating vinyl ownership is great, im all for it because its a great medium and personally i dont want dubplate culture to die.
I like to think that everyone is entitled to their opinion and i was just giving mine, i wasnt trying to negate the fact it was an interesting topic.
