Lots of people only listen to music that makes them feel good, genius music makes you think, which doesn't feel good on the dance floor

legend4ry wrote:Also; its not about how the site looks or about advertising, thats just one reason; its about the reputation and DSF:production has a good reputation for not helping people who are using cracked software and condemning the use of it and we'd like to keep that, do you really want Dubstep's main hub of community to be known as pirating wankers who don't care about independent industry? This isn't Grime; we care about that stuff (well, most people).
Image is not the only issue here. The biggest reason why DSF mods have to crack down on threads regarding illegal/bootlegged content is due to legal liability. If DSF was used as a hub for bootlegging, you better believe these forums would attract LEGAL ACTION from copyright holders due to its daily traffic alone. Thus, if you would like these forums to stay online, the mods need to do their job. 8)

This is the third time I am writing this as it keeps signing me out every time I hit submit :u:

I've been following this forum for months and think it's time i signed up and gave my 2 cents.

First: I agree with wub, there is so much free software legally available. The first synth I learnt to program was TAL elek7ro. I had acquired commercial synths earlier but had never bothered to learn how to use them or found them too complicated. Also Greenoak Crystal deserves a plug, I don't think it was mentioned earlier in the thread.

Second: I remember downloading a ton of synths illegally when I first discovered electronic music but all I did with them was browse through presets, finding a sound i liked, writing some d-grade riff and moving on to the next synth to find the next sound etc. You can get the same results (which may not necessarily be a good thing anyway, but more about that in my third point  ) with any free VST or something like Reaktor Player if you are convinced a major player like NI are the only way to get good patches. Also there are allot of multi-sampled basses floating around atm on forums that you can load into a sampler and they work the same way as if your just using presets.

Third: There are free samples all over the net. The former mentioned bass multisamples are just the tip of the iceberg. Drum hits, percussion loops, full drum loops, musical loops, chord progressions, FX, risers in every genre ever invented are available without searching too hard. I think the best place to start is with sample loops, as in 1,2,4 or 8 bar etc loops of drums, or a synth part, or chords or something. There is nothing wrong with writing your first tracks with nothing but sample loops. I never did.... I tortured myself trying to learn to compose, arrange, program and what not all at once and I which I had of know otherwise. I got frustrated out of music so many times. I'd say it’s been 4 or 5 years ago I discovered writing electronic music but only the last 7 or 8 months I've been consistent with it. It’s unrealistic to expect your first tracks to be any major success so the best bet is to have fun with some loops. Loops take away the composition element in terms of programming notes or recording midi parts. This means you can focus on arranging and engineering your sounds with EQ, Compression and other cornerstone effects. Therefore, IMO loops are the answer to understanding arrangement and finding out the type of sounds you like together. This sound can then be processed and taken further. So even though you aren't making your own sounds or doing much to put your own flavour on the loops you are using, you are still beginning to develop your sound. Dubstep has allot to do with what timbres you choose and how you arrange them. even the complextro style chaos basslines from skrillex rely on the fundamental sense of arrangement.

So when u go to write a tune, all you will need is a drum loop, a pad or some kind of atmosphere backing loop. Maybe a melodic sample u found and then a bass sample (make sure everything is in key and in time). Then as your skills develop you can begin cutting up the samples more, adding effects and getting them to gel. Once u got a feel for flow and how things need to sit musically so they sound good to you only then I'd worry about synthesis. Especially "if you cant be arsed" to have a good look through the search result before posting you will have no hope sitting down for endless hours learning the art of synthesis.

Anyway, I hope someone gets something out of this. I think cracked software, whether you think its moral or not or whatever you want to do is not the answer when you want to start writing music. I think it only hinders creativity, and who wants that?

the end haha

IMO: software developers deserve money for their work

There are so many free and good software synths and FX out there, you really shouldn't HAVE TO steal

having said that, I am never one chastize or jump down the throats of people who use cracked software.

I understand not everyone is in the position to pay $500 for a DAW and around $100 - $300 for softsynths and FX

Easy as this.

Designing and writing a cross platform audio program is one of the hardest things ever. I tried to build a simple frequency modulation synthesizer that would just modulate a carrier with a modulator in java, and I'm willing to bet this was harder than child birth

I'm not even being a saint here, I torrent TV shows, but the only way companies like NI, Camel Audio, and Blue Cat are able to continue to develop their products is with the money they make from previous products. Our money produces and supports these products. We feed their programming.

I don't really care if people torrent, I understand why children do it -- their money isn't independent and a lot of parents don't understand this Music production deal -- but if everything you own is torrented 2-3 years into your career, then I think you should reconsider purchasing a few things. As far as I see it, there are a handful of loyal customers who buy their products, and I think this allows developers to get by -- for now.

Sooo after reading the 3 pages this thread has turned into, let's recap:

OP and his thread started out on an address to the community on their poor support for newbies. He also mentions using cracked software :/ (this was your biggest mistake)
Community attacks back, plainly justifying why it's important NOT to ever/indefinitely use cracked software...either way you look at it..
also they explain the importance of why DSF should NOT be endorsing cracked software..
We get a little bit on search tips. Wub plays it SUPER cool here. Legendary backs him up, remaining steadfast in his rationales...
The thread starts to deviate into what makes people dance on the floor...
and we close with another fundamental reason...Time (aka support, work, etc) = money

To the OP: If a wealthy drug dealer goes to pay for a big ticket item in straight CASH, does the person receiving all this "dirty money" say anything?...No, but he sure as hell pays his taxes and keeps his mouth shut.

I don't endorse this, but come on man...The real truth here is that your ORIGINAL question that was asked on this board, which got locked by wub, was a serious display of laziness...and what wub did pissed you off b/c you didn't get the answer you wanted, and you knew you had to depend on YOURSELF to find the answer...Did you even read your POST? Fuck man....better yet, go read it a month from now (assuming you stuck with producing music)...Are you laughing at yourself now at how ridiculous all this was?...Come on people. Do you not research before you ask questions? THIS MUST BE COMMON SENSE IF YOU PLAN TO GET ANYWHERE WITH MUSIC...FUCK, anywhere in LIFE....Sticky's are SOOOO IMPORTANT meng...and trust me, if you were really passionate about making electronic music, you wouldn't be butt hurt about how you get treated by an INTERNET COMMUNITY, and your ass wouldn't give a shit that you had to sort through, fuck, 10,000 results...

It's knowing that you're willing to bring that kind of passion to the table so to speak, that enables the community to embrace you as a budding producer. Can it get TOO CRITICAL? Can it get TOO OPINIONATED? HELL YEA!...You're on the internet where peoples' ego is so overinflated, everyone thinks they are god and can treat anyone the way they want...Sad, but it's the way IT IS. So don't get discouraged, rise above, and get your ass in that DAW....

/endRant....I do feel for these mods...Lol...I think the guys over at DOA and GHF might have it easy :P

P.s. Now that this thread is hopefully coming to a close, I think I'll throw out my opinion on danceable music and see where this goes....
I've noticed the "spectrum" of the capacity for humans to "identify" with music. Evidence of one "identifying" with a song would be dancing on the dance floor. The spectrum is as this:

Pop music------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------IDM

Personally, I've be exposed to the roots of dubstep, seen mainstream dubstep, and know what the community considers TRUE dubstep. IMO, the really intelligent music doesn't groove with me as much on the dancefloor as the more superficial music does. Sad, I think so, but I don't beat myself up too hard b/c of my awareness of the fact and that I've become a producer of EDM. So given that, appreciation goes out unconditionally to those who are pushing sound itself so very far...but I got into music through dance and that's the best way to reach as many people as possible at once. I will intentionally produce tunes meant for the dancefloor b/c that's what I like. Unfortunately, the dancefloor is a merciless environment. I understand that some of the most intelligent and wicked tunes may never make it to the dance floor b/c far too many people can't "identify" with it. Yes, I hope I painted a very clear picture of the general intellectual capacity the average person who hits a club dancefloor has...

P.P.S.: I'm a likeable guy, i swear :P

I aplogize if this point has been made already but Legend4ry is correct here. I dunno if i'd go as far to say naivety makes me physically sick, because really we all were at some point in the process about something or other, but I get his drift. That being said I believe it's much less excusable these days to pirate shit due to the vast amount of freeware and powerful demos available, which hasn't always been the case, if for no other reason than the more people who use these illegal versions, the less money the company makes on their product and thus an overall higher price for people who actually buy the product. Also this takes money away from the company that could be used for assisting real buyers and future R&D, which ends up hurting us all. I dunno, just my two cents..

I feel like this thread followed a story arc of some sort of teen PSA dealing with bullying and that we all grew as individuals watching OP understand his mistakes. Group hug? lolol

As an aside, big fucking ups to Wub for handling everything like a goddamn champ. That's how a gentleman handles verbal assaults; remain calm and friendly and maintain the higher ground. Like Obi-Wan.

and anyway, I dont blame OP for being upset. I've gotten some hate on here too, but usually you gotta laugh it off, turn it into a joke (if it isn't already)
