Nah basically I used to just mix under a limiter and then the ME would tell me to take the limiter off, but then my songs were clipping, so basically I thought that I could export the track clipped and the mastering engineer could bring it to a lower volume so it didn't clip
Thankfully I've actually read the money shot thread now, and I'm doing alright with mixdowns now

Icicle says no.
You can hear it in his tunes though, only it doesn't sound bad when he does it for some reason, fits his sound anyway

i wasn't saying that. i was saying that even IF the master is peaking at +6dB, if you SOLO one instrument (muting all the other channels) then your master will not be peaking anymore. therefore you could export the STEMS without them peaking (because they are probably anywhere from -20dB to -9dB on their own), despite the master still peaking when ALL the tracks are activated.Earjax wrote:Nah basically I used to just mix under a limiter and then the ME would tell me to take the limiter off, but then my songs were clipping, so basically I thought that I could export the track clipped and the mastering engineer could bring it to a lower volume so it didn't clipThankfully I've actually read the money shot thread now, and I'm doing alright with mixdowns now
yes, if you record a signal that's peaking it will sound like shit. obvious statement is obvious.

if the bass sounded good while it was clipping and shit when putting the volume down then i would have recorded it at whatever volume it sounds best at, then with the bounced wav put it back in the project with the volume low. clipping isnt always a bad thing i use it on my snares tbh.. however when sending to an ME id never let anything in my final mix reach over -3db.
