Well, you were not alone. Some of my friends did the same thing in late '90's - early '00's when they thought they were going to go all software. It makes no difference whether you have a Virus or a Software Synth, if you're not a very good producer, then that's just the way it is. Whether you develop your knowledge and skillset on a soft synth or hardware it makes no difference. It just comes down to what the person prefers.
I'm willing to bet the first bits of gear you purchased you still use today, and probably will for life. Whereas software goes out of date, the synths will be around forever (so long as their kept in good condition and serviced).
Btw. Do you have images of your setup would love to see.
You can see my last studio setup in the "post the pics of your studio" thread around page 54ish. I have just recently moved, so my studio looks different now.
