in general, using a compressor to control your levels is lazy mixing. compressors are wonderful tools because of how they can change the tone of a sound-- getting drums to really snap, or be really thickened up; bringing a vocal "forward" in the mix or really squashing backgrounds with superfast-attack compression to push them to the back of the mix; creating energetic pumping in tracks, etc. control your levels w/ the faders and automation afterwards, but compression is generally essential getting the right tone from tracks.psychedelicatessen wrote: instead of the kick peaking at -8 after makeup gain, it'll probably peak around -7.
