If I have a wav of something that was only released digitally, am I OK to have a dubplate cut of the track (considering the record label has the copyright of the track etc)?

only thing u gotta watch for is that its a wav, lots of free tunes are only 320s. other than that, no worrieshorsefeather wrote:its also ok to cut a free tune to an acetate ?rorz9992 wrote:Got a question I think I know the answer to but just want to check.

Re: acetate discussions
Surely to cut someone else's tune to dubplate, you'd have to mail the original producer and get an unmastered wav, and have that mastered for vinyl, because a wav mastered for CD or digital isn't really gonna work on a dubplate...
Anyone in the UK have a few suggestions of some reputable, affordable cutting places? Thinking of getting a few bits done, and I'm pretty sure there's no-one cutting anything in Ireland.

if you have dmz wavs, you don't have them legitimately. they only sold as mp3s and only for a short time. unless you're turning your mp3s into wavs, which is pretty dumb.dididub wrote:Yeah but what if someone cut two wav's of haunted/anti war dub whacked a white label on it, and started selling it as dmz007?droogie wrote:
What about selling second hand cd's on discogs like? It's all a bit of a greyzone i think. If i cut a dubplate and then sold it down the line i wouldn't feel bad.Cause no doubt purchasing a brand new wav woulda been the cheaper option for whoever was buying it from me.
Granted, you'd have to be pretty stupid to buy it, but even so, some people would.
Re: acetate discussions
Im fairly sure that when a DJ gives away a free tune in WAV it's totally unmastered(might be a few exceptions obviously) sure there was a thread here where someone said they got a 320 cut and it sounded fine.frankiegrimes wrote:Surely to cut someone else's tune to dubplate, you'd have to mail the original producer and get an unmastered wav, and have that mastered for vinyl, because a wav mastered for CD or digital isn't really gonna work on a dubplate...

As for places to get cut
http://www.dub-plates.org/ (AKA transition)
http://www.dubstudio.co.uk/ (Website seems to be down at the moment)
Re: acetate discussions
Yeah.. you can cut anything really. It obviously won't sound as good as a mastered record but it will work, that's what the cutting engineers job is.droogie wrote:Im fairly sure that when a DJ gives away a free tune in WAV it's totally unmastered(might be a few exceptions obviously) sure there was a thread here where someone said they got a 320 cut and it sounded fine.frankiegrimes wrote:Surely to cut someone else's tune to dubplate, you'd have to mail the original producer and get an unmastered wav, and have that mastered for vinyl, because a wav mastered for CD or digital isn't really gonna work on a dubplate...

So has anyone done this? That MAH comp has a lot of OOP classics. What would the cutting house say if you mailed them a CD and you wanted tracks x, y and z pressed.RightOnTime27 wrote:nope anti-war dub was on some planet mu comp a while back, same for haunted i think (different label though)south3rn wrote:if you have dmz wavs, you don't have them legitimately. they only sold as mp3s and only for a short time. unless you're turning your mp3s into wavs, which is pretty dumb.dididub wrote:Yeah but what if someone cut two wav's of haunted/anti war dub whacked a white label on it, and started selling it as dmz007?droogie wrote:

It costs 3 grand and the blanks cost nearly as much as a dubplate!Mr_Frost wrote:RightOnTime27 wrote:south3rn wrote:dididub wrote:droogie wrote:

Also, its' not going to be a great deal of good to you unless you know how to master tracks properly!

Re: acetate discussions
i have mud/rufage on wav. it was the only dmz released as wav/flac when they were all up on bleep. i'm a wierdo who won't buy mp3s, just wav/flacs, so it's the only one i got. am still a bit gutted i missed out on the rest, but then again, i don't do 320's, so it's fair enough.south3rn wrote:if you have dmz wavs, you don't have them legitimately. they only sold as mp3s and only for a short time. unless you're turning your mp3s into wavs, which is pretty dumb.dididub wrote:Yeah but what if someone cut two wav's of haunted/anti war dub whacked a white label on it, and started selling it as dmz007?droogie wrote:

Cutting a WAV onto a Dubplate is no different than burning it to a CD, surely? I dont see why you would need permission.

I've done it before. They're usually chuffed to know someone wants to get their tune cut at great personal expense.

Re: acetate discussions
I have dubs!!

Had a really great time in Transition on Friday getting 3 10"s cut. Also had a fantastic chat with Leon about dubstep and the future of vinyl culture, top bloke! Definitely recommend Transition to people who are considering getting this done!
Few quick questions for people who have experience with acetates...
i) How do you keep your dubs clean? eg. type of cloth/cleaning solutions
ii) What sort of tracking weight do you tend to use to play then? - I have Shure Whitelabels.
iii) Any tips on making the hole in the centre a bit bigger so they're easier to mix with? I know scissors work for vinyl, but aluminum is a bit tougher!!
Peace
