I remember many years ago in carpenting class that we had to make a doorbell and I got this brilliant idea to put my ear right next to the speaker and test it. It hurt like hell and I didn't hear properly for the next couple of hours. I was proper scared

so does anyone have any elaborate experience with this? Mine has gotten progressively worse over the past month to the point where it is really starting to interfere with my day to day functioning.
I'm seeing my GP about it tonight, I'm sure he'll send me to a ear/nose/.... specialist, but maybe some of you here have already gone through that stage?

I've been avoiding listening on headphones all together. Deep Medi night two weeks ago didn't help even though I was way out in the back all of the time.I've been reading up on the subject but prospects aren't great (though some advancements have been made in treatment in recent years). I'm just really worried that I'm going to be stuck in the current state, which is problematic.

I'm just surpised that out of a bunch of people, I'm the one that's seemingly getting it the worst. I haven't been producing in half a year, I play music a lot yes, but I always figured I kept it below the 80 decibels... headphones might be a different story, but then how did I get it so sudden, I had no complaints what so ever before the last new year for example.

I have had tinnitus for about 1 year now. Sometimes it really pisses me off, mainly late at night when it's quiet or even after dinner reading the paper with the tv off.
I do hope it goes away 1 day, even if for short periods. I mean i find when i'm active playing ps3 watching tv out with mates it's not too bad. I find that when it really gets to me i say to myself i am lucky compared to some people living with real problems such as being in a wheel chair, loss of limbs, being blind and so on.
It's all about thinking of all the positive in ya life, then tinnitus really won't be much of a problem.

Think my dad already got the brain scan etc.. done to investigate whether this would benefit him or not.

has anyone ever had any experience with something like low frequency tinnitus?
it started last night and hasnt gone away since - sounds like there is a stationary vehicle with the engine running constantly, just a low pitched hum, always the same tone but varying in loudness depending on how many other sounds are going on. pretty worried

I have to say my Tinnitus is not low frequency (in fact, I'd say mine is midrange lol haha). But, low frequency sounds are as common with tinnitus as high frequency, so it is very possible.

Don't just assume yours has to do with sound damage. Since my first post in this thread over three months ago, I've taken three different types of anti-allergy pills, some more effective than others. I've taken steroid-like pills for a middle ear infection (with some success) and now recently, after finally consulting with an ear-nose-throat specialist, it was established that the probably source of my infection was not my middle ear infection, but rather my infection was oesophageal and worked its way up through my throat into my middle ears via the Eustachian tube. The medication I'm taking now has really helped it, but the tinnitus is not gone. But after three months, I've sort of gotten used to it so sleeping works much better now. So don't despair people, just give it some time, the first 1.5 months were a torture for me I agree, but now It doesn't seem to be so big of a problem any more (mind you the pills have reduced the tinnitus effects by quite a lot).

I did an elaborate hearing test at the specialists, and he determined my tinnitus is not hearing damage related, for my hearing is almost normal (a slight dip in the higher tones, but no more than someone who works in a factory). So he's confident that mine will subside completely at one point. So don't despair people.

If you're ringing doesn't stop, my advise is go to your doctor, but ask him to go get you a recommendation for an ear-throat-nose specialist sooner rather than later. I spent two months taking medication I didn't really need. Not good.

also, as I said in the other thread, have gotten quality earplugs since three months and haven't regretted it one moment.

Maybe I should clarify that post:

My tinnitus and ear/throat/oesapaghes infection are probably unrelated, but any problems with cold/throat/airways/lungs will almost inevitably enhance the tinnitus by quite a lot (a simple cold). Or allergic reactions to pollen etc. So you might have had a slight form of tinnitus for months already, but you didn't even notice it until another problem amplifies it.

That's what I was trying to say. So you might have a treatable problem that once treated, could help your tinnitus issues a long way. As I said, mine hasn't disappeared completely, but it is very manageable at the moment.
