yeah plasterer's don't really do other trades, dry lining and tacking a lot but nout else.

Or do you mean mentally? I gig at weekends and run my own event and sell photos so I have other things for my brain to work on too.

no I meant purely from a job perspective
here guys are general builders
they can lay bricks, plaster, etc.

but that being said, I guess you can also hire professional plasterers for the more refined crete work
and for bulk-head work

In the UK it can pay more than most jobs. If you're reasonably good at it that is. Same is true for most trade professions. That's why the DIY culture is quite strong as well, because it's too expensive to get someone in to do everything.

Ah right, yeah it's pretty normally here. You get tradesman that have one trade. And labourers working for them (with the intention of becoming an improver, and then a plasterer or whatever the relevant trade is).

You get site labourers here, but they are just carrying stuff about sites. Obviously you get the odd old guy that can do multiple trades but it's not common practice here.

Money is shit being a labourer. I come home feeling like I've been gang raped daily but I'm learning something worthwhile that no qualification could teach me.

It's alright money, but when you factor in how many times you get stitched up/builders go bust on you/van/tools/petrol etc, it's a pretty normal wage. Varies between regions massively but down here good plasterers work is worth about £120 a day privately.

I just like the idea of using my hands to create something, and working for myself more than working in an office watching a clock 9 hours a day.

Yeah that sounds about right, over here it's probably between £150-200/day. Going rates for plumbers and electricians (I think) is £200/day. If you work for yourself and have a full diary (which obviously doesn't happen) then it's reasonable money I think. it does take quite a fair amount of hands-on training to get there though.

I think I might want to learn how to tile. But I might get too OCD about it.

Yeah, enjoy what I'm doing at uni, but know when I qualify I'll get fuck all money compared to the job I'm doing, love the job though...

would be much easier to break into straight up PR/marketing as everyone and their mother seems to be looking for a "social media expert" (AKA young person) but i've got too much faith in the free printed press to sell out just yet.

i do have to say though, the culture of neo-slave labor is something that really grates my nerves-- very few jobs would expect you to work full-time for several months for free, but it's common practice for media groups nowadays. shameful.

In the current climate more companies are trying their luck, especially with the younger out-of-work.

I bet if you asked any of them if they enjoyed their job they'd say they didn't... being idle is amazingly overrated... I had 3 months off on full pay the other year when I was waiting for my consultancy to find me a new contract... wasn't at all good for the soul! I was properly grumpy after about a week!

Just had 2 weeks paid holiday from the day-job myself.
Absolutely amazing, as everyday i woke up knowing i had the whole day to focus on pushing my career,
and being paid by the day-job to do it!
Ended up with some business plans, clients lined up, job applications sent, portfolio improved. All whilst still feeling like time off!
That's how i know i love my career!


The day-job however, is wank...but it's an income for the moment

Not sure if it's going to be a career, but currently work as a support worker with autistic students in a FE resedential college. I love the job, but the hours can be killer and can put me on a downer often. But I work term time so it's like being at school again
