I suggested to make the max time longer, and you made it shorter...

I will generally make a pad or sound longer than 15secs

Re: Anyone for a "Weekly Sound Design Challenge"?
Great idea but I think there should be a rule against single cycle resampling as you could just use a variety of different processes to turn a sine wave in to a saw tooth or something a richer in harmonics
Edit: Unless the point is that if you can do something like that it just puts you in good standing as a sound designer in this competition..?

I`m done with mine but one thing I`m not sure of is you say start with a sine.
If I use FM, I can start with a sine but use 5 other waveforms of any kind?
I think it needs to be stipulated sines only.

Yeah, the person with the most votes, well they win. I think we will all be winners though! We will all benefit and "win" something from doing this. Start designing your sound by the way. Deadline is Monday, February the 13th. Just get a sine wave and do what you want. Add filters and effects and make a sexy sound!

Re: Anyone for a "Weekly Sound Design Challenge"?
I have the same question,i have finished mine too,the base sound was a sine but with plenty of overtones added using various effects.Even managed to get white noise from the sine using a send too so a bit more clarification before i upload please?Electric_Head wrote:I`m done with mine but one thing I`m not sure of is you say start with a sine.

Re: Anyone for a "Weekly Sound Design Challenge"?
its a bit like the sample pack comps - you have to use a sample or in this case a sine to start with. but really that doesn't mean a thing, once you get used to using single sample waveforms, bouncing and layering sounds and using your sampler like a synth, its really not much of a restriction at all. you can generate pretty much any waveform you can think of, and once you put it through resonant filter sweeps, distortion, chorus etc then its just like any other synth sound.lloydy wrote:I have the same question,i have finished mine too,the base sound was a sine but with plenty of overtones added using various effects.Even managed to get white noise from the sine using a send too so a bit more clarification before i upload please?Electric_Head wrote:I`m done with mine but one thing I`m not sure of is you say start with a sine.

i think this comp is a bit ambiguous. its basically just 'make a cool sound', with no real goal on what sort of sound to make. perhaps it might be better in future to have some sort of goal to aim for? i.e make a cool pad, twisted reese, good drum beat etc.

Ok thanks, yeah it would be a bit more of a challenge if there was some sort of structure to it,i mean i just made my sound within about 20 mins so maybe giving me something to aim for would of been a bit more of a challenge.I still think this thread is a good idea just needs a bit of tweaking me thinks

Re: Anyone for a "Weekly Sound Design Challenge"?
I've managed to get kick, snare, sub bass and midrange bass from using one sine wave supplied by logics test oscillator and 7 buses. This should of been make a tune with one sine wave comp i think i would of smashed it lol.

Re: Anyone for a "Weekly Sound Design Challenge"?
Well it is all about creativity. If you want to make your sine wave into a saw and post that, go for it. It is all about creativity! I might change it so it starts on mondays, end on friday and everything will be posted on saturday and winner announced sunday. Might also increase the time limit so people can make a compilation a sounds. Maybe 30 second max. Tell me what you guys think.

Re: Anyone for a "Weekly Sound Design Challenge"?
Yeah next week I am taking Jrisreal's idea. Instead of a video I will find a picture. You will have to chose either what sound the object would make or what it would hear. For example, a picture of an elephant. You would either chose to make the elephant "honk" noise or make a sound that represents what the animal would hear during everyday life. But trust me, the pictures will be very abstract.

I do think the 15 secs is a bit short, you can't really show of your sound design skills that well,i think 30secs so you can go insane and throw loads of stuff at it.The picture idea is really good be interesting to see what people come up with.

Re: Anyone for a "Weekly Sound Design Challenge"?
Thats all good,i think you made the rite choice. With ideas i think just mix it up,some weeks make it proper abstract and other weeks just nice and simple like who ever can make the most acoustic sounding drum kit wins.Just got to keep it challenging,i think the most important part of something like this is people get to practice there sound design and get ideas from everyone else.I do think its vital people should discuss the processes they used to get to the sounds they made so everyone can take something from this then hopefully if it continues for the forceable future the competition should get much tougher because people will be getting better and better at it.Win win in my opinion.

Yeah, I totally agree with everything you said. I really want to do a physical modeling type challenge. That would be crazy fun!

Re: Anyone for a "Weekly Sound Design Challenge"?
It could end up a great thread and a brilliant idea, weekly comps for everyone to improve of the back off.If it does pan out really well wub should stickie it and keep it a weekly thing.I think there should be more proactive projects on the forum to help us all become better at every side of building tunes from the ground up and this could be one of one of the threads on it's way to doing that so i say props to you for the idea just make sure you keep it going and lets see where it goes.
