Bought them off a guy I knew that inherited them. Talked him down from his original price, its even more of a buyer's market today then back then so you could probably get a good price with a little negotiation.

you really think coki would get "left behind" if he continued playing plates only? it seems to me that deciding to play both is just a way to minimize his stress while playing out and to make the experience more enjoyable for everyone in the case that the decks are not up to par.

Not necessarily left behind right now, but in 5 or 10 years when "everybody" DJ's with decks, he's going to be the only one lugging around vinyl. This reminds me of older people who don't use phones or the internet. What the fuck? Just because you did it differently as a kid doesn't mean you can't change and adapt to a "better" way. I'm not saying CDJs are better than vinyl (I haven't really read up on the subject so I don't know) but they are definitely more convenient because more clubs are set up to cater to them (in my experience). There's a point where oldschool becomes inconvenient and some of these DJ's are right on that line. But in the end it's all up to their decision. If they have more fun DJing with vinyl then kutos to them. I personally think Coki made a good decision switching.DREdio wrote:you really think coki would get "left behind" if he continued playing plates only? it seems to me that deciding to play both is just a way to minimize his stress while playing out and to make the experience more enjoyable for everyone in the case that the decks are not up to par.

I like this fresh and original opinion on DJing with vinyl and would like to hear much more. If somebody could counter his opinion with one of your own, that too would be awesome.OfficialDAPT wrote:Not necessarily left behind right now, but in 5 or 10 years when "everybody" DJ's with decks, he's going to be the only one lugging around vinyl. Vinyl isn't going to die in 5-10 years. It's actually seeing a resurgence at the moment. All around me I see people who are just getting into vinyl. Every city has dedicated djs and nights for playing records. Sure, it won't be the mainstream medium anymore; those days are long gone. But it will always be there in certain scenes.garethom wrote:I like this fresh and original opinion on DJing with vinyl and would like to hear much more. Yeah I agree.. and all those producers using roland drum machines are stupid too. What the fuck? Just cause your grandad had an 808 drum machine doesnt mean there isnt a plugin and loads of free samples to download.. you idiots!OfficialDAPT wrote:This reminds me of older people who don't use phones or the internet. Re: Coki gives up vinyl, switches to CDJs
Not even at the MOMENT, vinyl has been growing stronger every year for the last few years. There's some figures around of sales (not just electronic, I mean the medium). Anyway, how about how CDJs are also becoming obsolete in the wake of laptop and... iPad sets. I see less and less people using any physical medium at all. When CDJs first took off I was like "wtf fuck mixing with CDs" like most people, but later on I learned to appreciate them more when I first saw people attempting to DJ on a laptop with Winamp and the crossfade plugin.dsprainman wrote:Vinyl isn't going to die in 5-10 years. This was the one. Granted, I think the majority of it is hipsters picking up the new Black Key's album or whatever, but even the fact that people are getting into vinyl for casual listening makes me happy.

Whew! I thought everyone was going to attack me for having opinions, but I guess not. I totally agree the CDJs are going out also. I think in the coming years live sets with programs like ableton like and Midi controllers will greatly inscrease. It's going to take a long time for CDJs to totally hit the dumps, or maybe they never will. I guess we'll see.

Re: Coki gives up vinyl, switches to CDJs
It's so much easier to mix on cd decks, i'll never give up my vinyl but i bought a cd deck off my mate a few months ago, more because he needed the money and i didn't want him selling it to someone we didn't know, i thought i'd only use it for playing my own tunes in sets but from when i'm used paying 7 quid a track and all of a sudden they're less than a pound...... i'm not surprised vinyl hasn't completely died out as anything more than a promotional tool by now. I'm not a fan of the way tracks sound on a cd deck tho, i'm constantly EQing the high end off and trying to boost the bass.

But vinyl 5-10 yearsOfficialDAPT wrote:It's going to take a long time for CDJs to totally hit the dumps, or maybe they never will. I guess we'll see.

CDJs will be long gone before vinyl goes. CDJs will likely be replaced with laptops or things that use USB or small external hard drives. All hold digital but hold so much more data. Its only a matter of time before CD is scrapped and its just a deck with a usb port or something similar. I'm not saying this will ever happen or will happen soon, I'm just saying you'll definitely see the death of CDJs before you see the death of vinyls and turntables.

Why would people who speak Dutch want a 2nd hand product site called craigslistSonika wrote:yeah they do have craigslist but it was started by americans who missed it and it has like 30 products
I'll keep my eyes open though - I'm surprised you couldn't get away for selling them for more wormcode, if you look up "technics 1200" one of the first results is one for like $1500 on ebay

a lot of decks for sale too.
Still, 2nd hand Technics are more expensive here. A pair for 1500$ is probably new though (there are still stores with
new 1200/1210's in stock). Decent pairs go for around €600/€700 here.

Re: Coki gives up vinyl, switches to CDJs
vinyl and the turntable carry with it certain nostalgia that digital media does not and for this reason alone it will persist. CDJs dont perform any function that a laptop and controller cant do. plus for the cost of a pair of CDJ 2000s you could purchase a computer (that is capable of performing many tasks other than playing music), a controller, and probably have some change to spare. Its just as likely that CDJs will become rare in clubs and DJs will be expected to bring their controller/ laptop. However, i do agree that at the moment it is more convenient to play CDs than vinyl in a club setting.

When people talk about vinyl sales going up, they aren't talking about some garage label suddenly being able to sell out a 1000 press run, they're talking about major labels pressing vinyl for the hipsters, and people buying represses of huge albums, unfortunately.

Re: Coki gives up vinyl, switches to CDJs
vinyl, dvs, midi and cdjs are options, just like manual or automatic, hydraulic or mechanic. they all can get the job done, they all have pro and cons. I'd hate to drive an automatic dodge charger in a highway or a circuit, but I rather drive an automatic car in the traffic.
analogies and shit.

Re: Coki gives up vinyl, switches to CDJs
i don't really see laptops as taking over, cdjs are about the convenience, loosing a bunch of CDs isn't the end of the world, plus they're ultra portable not only would u have to carry ur laptop/interface/controller around with you, you'd be constantly worried about ppl damaging ur gear
Re: Coki gives up vinyl, switches to CDJs
I'm not sure why, and stepping back and looking at my opinion it looks really dumb, but I really don't like the idea of midi controllers, laptop DJs, and the like. I'm not sure why, but I just feel like DJing should be a 2-deck one-mixer thing (or 3 or 4 decks)
I also don't like that they can just press the sync button and go in calling themselves a DJ
although I don't know why that's such a big deal to me....it just seems wrong to me....idk
