this

overhype like that ruins artists for me. i like boddika but i'd be put off going to see him again cos the hype has got to such a point that 75% of the crowd would be there because of the name rather than the tunes.
Theres nothing worse than hearing a tune you love and wanting to dance but you cant cos your in a rammed venue, stood shoulder to shoulder with hipsters who only care enough to nod their heads.

this is my problem with the "bass music" scene as a whole atm

the best night i've been to in ages was Audio Werner. there were only about 30/40 people in the room but every single person there was there because they were into the music. the vibes were crazy, everyone just bobbin around smiling n laughing fuckin lovin every second.

its nights like that that make you realise how detrimental to the scene the hype machine can be

arrrh dat sounds cute :w:

i think all DJ's worth their name should be constantly looking for new artists/releases to push. i don't think the record buying/downloading public can be blamed for only buying the things they know about but DJs have no excuse considering it's their job and it can only benefit them.

indeed and if the djs do that
the public will get to know it
and then they may buy it
and other people benefit
more diverse sounds abound

Agreed with this 100% and I think it's very relevant to this thread.
I always love tuning into the Hessle show because there's ALWAYS something I haven't heard.

100% agree with this. He's just playing his mates' music, just stuff sent to him, no need to dig. I mean, I'm not trying to fuel some sort of musical ADD here, but still, introduce newer artists. Swamp show got a bit too Boddika Acid Bassline b2b next Zed Bias tune b2b next acid bassline. One reason I try to listen to the Dusk & Blackdown show as much as possible.
I think it is superhealthy he plays his mates' music. That's the essence and I wish more people did it :h:
I mean, its not just his mates music though is it. Im pretty sure Happa hasnt been jamming with Loefah on the regs. From that example, im pretty sure loe would play any tune he got sent that he liked

cheers man. i dont particularly like stickin my neck out
and there are always contradictions / grey areas
just trying to suggest viewing the situation more broadly
to nurture it

i acknowledge it's hard for most people in today's economy
as i'm pretty sure the majority of the super-wealthy aren't avid ravers / vinyl junkies
but i think it's worth taking music and culture seriously
it captures and reflects the changing character of our people
and can be a barometer of our times
look in the far flung neglected corners and u may discover a beautiful gem

donga is correct and a good discussion it has been so far imo
not one person has asked for a swamp81 or when something on swamp coming out

i feel in 2 minds about this hype situation.

firstly these hyped labels and artists have become victims (if you can say selling a record is a BAD THING) of their own success - as far as I can see they haven't done anything specific and untoward to promote their music they just happen to be on that special nexus of time / taste / trend (and quality tbh) and have built a following from previous releases or interest garnered from the internet / radio.

however

as soon as i see these hype threads i feel sick and know i wont buy the record as its gonna be rinsed out and every bastard is going to have it. rather go to discogs tbh, i can see if you are a DJ that plays out why you would want though. that fucking sunklo thread jesus its retrded and that other Joy O release that got a wack pressing lol, people goign beserk. You only need to say 'forthcomign on swamp81' and its gonna get 123456 views. kind of sad tbh. but delivery a quality package and some semblance of rarity and its gonna sell.

not really sure what my point is tbh
here is a 'mix' (more a collection of fade in out music) with a police tune in it. i put it in there in the hope ben ufo wont listen to it.

A lot of these big artists (Joy O, Boddika, Blawan, Redlight, etc) do deserve most of the hype they are getting just now I think, but when it gets to buying tracks before you even hear them because it's coming out on a specific label or by a particular artist is just plain stupid IMO. Still it has to be said these artists/labels that are getting the major hype atm do deserve it as 90% of what they release/play is pure quality.

I have to be honest and say I like everything that swamp81 have released and are playing atm, maybe I am getting a little sucked in by the hype but if I like the sound of something I like it, hyped by the masses or not. Still, I guess it is a bit sad that people can't be bothered looking for tunes themselves and just take what they are fed off these big DJs, if everyone done the same thing we would just be hearing the same 30 or so tunes over and over again, so big up to people like Ben UFO, Oneman, Jackmaster, etc for the originality and innovation :W:
