dont get me wrong, im the furthest thing from a fan of religion, but talking like that makes you come across as a 12 year old

religion developed naturally and fulfilled a useful role in society in more primitive times (while also unfortunately being used as a means of control and oppression). as we've reached a more modern era, that function religion used to serve has been and is being replaced by superior things. now we have science, government, schools, etc and as a result of decreased utility, you're ultimately also seeing an increase in atheism in the general public. if you look at the percentage of atheists 100 years ago, it's obviously a hell of a lot lower than today, ESPECIALLY if you look at the rates among youth today. don't worry, religion is on its way out. these things don't happen instantly however. patience.

not to mention that the statement "anything that comes from fear is toxic" is absurd. without fear as a basic survival mechanism, i doubt humans and pretty much every other animal would've come very far...

Fear leads to anger; anger leads to hate; hate leads to suffering.

Honestly, religion could stand to make a bit of a come back. The level of hostility and aggression in the public space is becoming dangerous. If the mouth breathers (by that i mean prople making over $250,000 a year and producing little, if any value, all the way down to tear tattooed 16 yo street thugs) can't figure out the value of our shared common interest in a respectful society, maybe we'd be better off with the bearded skygod?

wouldn't you say that the level of hostility and aggression in a lot of countries exists because of religion?

Can't say really, sure looks that way on the news. All I can really say is that for this town, people need to either get a little religion, or a barrel down their throats. It cannot continue this way indefinitely, we've already entered the feedback loop.

hopefully we can leave religion in favor of ethics

it may take some time, but i would rather people do right because they want to, not because of made up stories and lies

S'all the same, end of day. You love your neighbor because skygod told you to, or because it is reasonable, either way, just chill the fuck out and behave respectfully.

And in all honesty, don't you feel it in your town? The level of hostility, disrespect, and outright aggression is increasing?

Education > religion. Goes without saying. If people are taught to be good because it's correct as opposed to out of fear then everyone's a winner.

Don't get why people make such a fuss about religion these days, at least those who live in secular states.

because it gets in the way of those states really being secular

like here in california where the mormons managed to spend enough money to pass a ballot measure that denied gays the right to marry (which was luckily overturned 2 years or so later). or in the us congress where religious fundamentalists make up a good portion of the house science committee, saying things like "the earth is 6000 years old" and "evolution and global warming are lies straight from the pit of hell"
