Re: Headphones are fakes.
Didn't fancy getting a portable headphone amp for the 80ohm 770s so got the m50s in the end. They're really good, sound better and more comfortable than my old hd25s but not quite so good at nose isolation and would prefer it if they had removable cable.
Re: Headphones are fakes.
I use the 770's without an amp sometimes, not bad. But usually I have audio out over usb > audio8 > mixer > cansMr Hyde wrote:Didn't fancy getting a portable headphone amp for the 80ohm 770s so got the m50s in the end. which amplifies more than enough.
Anyway I think you made a great choice with the ath m50s.

Re: Headphones are fakes.
I just got a pair myself. They're pretty good although the high end sounds a bit fake and the mids sound a bit scooped. I'm coming from sony xb500s though which have pretty mild high end and a big ramp up in the low mids leading up to the high bass shelf, so I might just need time to acclimatize. They do sound more accurate and seem to have a better soundstage which is surprising since they're considered fairly lacking in that department from what I've read.
Earlier today I bought some Sennheiser Hd 595s for 78 bucks shipping included. I'm hoping they're like a 50 Ohm version of the 580/600/650 family. The open backs should complement the close backed ATH M50s. They're not as sexy as their newer version, the 598s, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity. I was just casually browsing ebay and found an auction with no bids and 2 hours left at 50 dollars, located in Canada. Mother fucking boo yea.
I'd like to get something from AKG now. A 701 would be nice but they're a bit expensive to buy just yet. I've kept an eye out for K240DFs though. Apparently they're extremely nice if you can find a pair in good condition. The Sextett LPs are supposed to be good as well. Both of them miles ahead of the modern K240 model.
A pair of Beyers or Ultrasones wouldn't hurt either but I think I've got the bassy cans covered with my Sonys and Audio Technicas.

i'm using beyerdynamic dt150 since a couple of months for 100'n'something euros on amazon, and I'm feeling really good, specially with the passage headphone<->monitors. (I use to work on a pair of cheap yamaha hs50)

Should I just get the tiesto 267s? Every online review for dj headphones this year says theyre top of the line and at $350 theyre right at my max price range.

Tbh it sounds like the OP has already settled on the tiesto cans despite asking for advice and was just looking for backup

Yep.
$350 and a Tiesto logo. Jesus christ I'd shoot myself twice. I hate when people do this. Why bother asking for advice from knowledgeable people if you're gonna ignore them and buy some stupid product that you've become attached to already? Not only are there exceptionally good headphones at that price, but I'd wager the Tiesto cans are exceptionally bad at any price point.

Re: Headphones are fakes.
I honestly don't like my dt770s that much. I don't know exactly what it is, but something about the mids and highs makes them not a reference I would trust. Saw waves pretty much fall apart completely, its really hard to explain but they sound like they are filtered and then bit crushed almost... not gud imho m8.
They seem to be missing a good scoop of mids and sound really trill too, idk. I still use them every once in a while though.
I am using a quality working amp too btw.

I noticed when I got my replacement Ultrasones they sounded absolutely naff compared to my old ones (same model). The mids sounded all fucked, the highs were weird etc. Nothing like my old broken ones used to sound.
Ultrasones need 80-100 hours of burn in time apparently (!), so I've got some way to go to get them sounding right

Re: Headphones are fakes.
Cool trick is to make a 1 minute loop of white noise and play it in iTunes. Then the playcount will tell you how many minutes total you've burned them in for.3rdeye wrote:Did you burn them in?Coolschmid wrote:I honestly don't like my dt770s that much. Re: Headphones are fakes.
that's a great idea! i just plug 'em into my Duet when i'm working on the monitors, get em cranked
But no idea of total burn in time. That's gold!

Re: Headphones are fakes.
no you shouldn't for fucks sake. the one consistent piece of advice you got was to NOT get those overpriced fuckers.
AKG K77's are $50 and sound as good. they're also light weight so very comfortable. but there have been plenty of suggestions here for higher end cans that are way more affordable than $350.
$350 on fucking headphones, are you rich?

Its weird because full mixes tend to sound the same albeit a bit more shrill, but pure saw waves sound like shite. Also, you know when you put a very fast lfo on the pitch of a saw wave and it becomes thicker and like a siren noise? You can't hear it on my 770s... I don't really know how to explain it. Sounds like a slightly more bitcrushed saw wave.
Re: Headphones are fakes.
Some experts suggest moving coils do need some burning in, but you need some kind of complicated waveform andSunkLo wrote:Cool trick is to make a 1 minute loop of white noise and play it in iTunes. most importantly: transients (iow music). But, reputable sources show that the margin of error on high quality driver's spec sheets are usually bigger than any difference between the same driver after it's burned in compared to when you first hook them up.
So what I take from that: the difference is going to be tiny at best. People from K&H and Adam for example say it's not necessary to burn their reference monitors in.
Now I'm not sure if it's the same with headphones, but it's the same method of transduction basically.
