Generally if this sort of thing has happened to you before you react a lot more appropriately (run or fight) if not, then it's not a real surprise that you would just stay there taking a beating.
Yeah instinct comes into it a lot in fights etc.
You sometimes barely remember what happened too from my experience. Its really weird feeling as you can miss 10-15 seconds of memory.

ive also been mugged a few times whilst on my own
that first few seconds of instinct is everything, and you have no idea how you'll react - sometimes i've fought back, sometimes ive just taken it
but afterwards i barely remember what happend
i think if your in a crowded place like outside a club its worth fighting back, cus if it goes bad its likely someone will jump in to stop, but if your on your own i just think like they could stab u or whatever and its not worth it for like £20
