All splendid
i listened to em at the same relative level to give em equal chance. Liquid rocks is incredibly loud, -7.5dB RMS! The relative volume makes a massive difference (foobar can do this, im sure other ways). Its natural to think something louder sounds better, NOT THAT IM IMPLYING ANYTHING WITH THIS STATEMENT.
Ascend - really like the vibe in this one. wicked edits on the beats. mellow and soulful.
DLX - really cool, well produced, but hate that guitar sample. soz ! nothing personal i hate heavy metal samples in all electronic stuff. weird, i actually like metal.
DZ - Well into this, but like was said before, really not feeling that bassline at 2 mins, sorry. accordion bit sounds mint.
Jolly Wailer - like the squelchy accord. well put together tune overall. not sure the vox fit brilliantly tho tbh.
krio - bad ! (meaning good !) Love the way the bass distorts itself. sitar gets a bit much imo
liquid rocks - bit over limited imo, little dynamics, touches of distortion. very very well produced just went overboard limiting afterwards imho. Shame, love the tune itself, really varied and creative, used loads of the original samples.
Martello - nice vibes really bouncy tune, got me moving ! enjoyed it a lot.
Paradigm X - well, after not listening to it for a few days, i like this, for 2 days work. too much bass, and im not sure if its very dubstep ? but i quite like as a breaky dub tune. i really enjoyed making it and will probably develop itcheers !
Relik - not sure about that first vocal tbh bro. second bits nice, like the dissonant bass ness, or filtered, whatever you did t oit. nice garagey vibe and constantly changing.
Feasible - great vid man, and interesting tune - works well with the vid.
In the end i removed as seemed fit from the playlist... was down to ascend and martello in the end, and in the end it was ...
Martello !
got me banging my head and jiggling the most.
hes not in the list, iim voting for him/her/them now !
big
Big up the pack creator, was a great sample pack. Lots of fun to be had, roll on the next one, hopefully get more than a couple of days in it.
big respect to all the producers, some fat tunes. be proud !
Cheers
edit lol picard actually bangs in time with martello! lol

.. I decided to convert your video to avi so I could watch it, I really like it, nice visuals, good use of the sounds... Next time, maybe keep the whole vid at 135bpm or whatever, just a suggestion.
If you need any help converting video formats give me a pm buddy.

well dont be so modest though man. everyone does this shit for fun. i really like 99.5% of everything you make...that i hear anyway. im just excited that theres about 5 or 6 people really concentrating on producing lately. cant wait for nepa to bust out with the seriousness.relik wrote:i was just busting. i don't expect anyone to like any of my tunes. if they do, that's cool...but yeah, just producing for the fun of it.

@ RELIK...
if I may make a suggestion if you are still having trouble with sync'ing accapellas...
what I usually do is -
start out by making your chop, exactly where you want the vocal to start out (in this case say verse 1) --- ok, obvious, you knew that..
now does the lyric of verse start on beat 1, or is there a pickup going into the first beat?... example ---> "so mi say gimme di maryjane pass it my way cause mi no joke I smoke..." and so on ... in this case "gimme" is on beat 1 and "so mi say" comes in on the & of 3 in the preceeding bar
stretching the accapella over the right number of bars would be misleading in this case because the accapella is starting slightly before bar #1
if you are off even by a single BPM the accapella will eventually get totally off sync and sound doo doo...
once you get the starting point of the accapella triggered on the right beat - and really you can only do that by sort of reciting the lyrics yourself and 'feeling' for where the down beat is in the lyrics' cadence - adjust the tempo on the sequencer so the metronome is going on with the lyrical flow ... so I sped up the tempo to something like 176 and the original accapella was spot on at this tempo --- so now I had my BPMs counted..
took the accapella file out of the sequencer - loaded it in PeakPro to edit/timestretch the duration from 176 down to 140
loaded the edited/stretched accapella back onto the track, set it to trigger on the & of 3 to pickup into the verse section and off I went...
I mean perhaps you know all this shit... but I spent a good portion of last year making mashups on FL so I kinda got pretty good/confident with accapellas -- not that its rocket science, but it does take a little bit of fuckery and patience to get it right..
::edit:: ok, peeped your tune again so that I knew what exactly I was referencing... ok, actually the accapella is synced pretty good throughout - so no BPM issues -- however there are one or two bits that start on the wrong beat and thats where the issue might be (I mean though its all really about where you want them to start not me innit
)... the one lyric "mi press hi-grade mi fed-express hi-grade" and then "so mi say gimme di maryjane" .. I think the accapella is just being triggered on the wrong beat so it sounds slightly off even though its running at the right tempo....
ok... sorry if I harped on forever about that - too much time spent in hiphop production forums where cats were really anal about accapella remixing

1. DZ
2. Jolly Wailer
3. Liquid Rocks
all of them were pretty ill in their own way, but those three i listened to all the way through feelin them not just listenin...
will also comment, but have to listen the tunes again...
@paradigm x: you are completely right:
i always tend to make things too loud:)![]()
aint louder =better?
no, just joke to provoke...
i now the theory behind things,
clean mix, no digital c.lipping,etc
but the whole tune was done in 3 evenings (after fucking work)
approx. 18 hous (incl. mixdown and "mastering")
after the clean mixdown without clipping
i just throw on my izotope hit the big button presets. etc.
after theat i took the "unmastered/clean"mix without distortion and
the mastered to my room mate...and he tried to master it with his newly
logic 8 (!) mastering channel strips....
but they couldnt come up with the power of the izozope...
so we decided to take the "mastered" version and "master" it again
was the best thing to go for in such short time, but u right, its overdone in my opinion too..
but it sounds good/ok on a big system ,
u can turn it loud without the compression getting too ugly i think...
but on little systems its crap...like laptop etc...
but nobody listens dubstep on these...
what system did you listen the tune on?
just to know where our mix doesnt translate...
nobody else was complaining bout this issue....
but i get your point
cheers and thanks for the constructive criticism

Ive got mackie 824s and a sub
its a personal thing, IMO its very slightly distorted on the peaks, but loud is the ways things are going these days...
i personally prefer a bit of dynamic range, something like -11 - -12 sounds about right to me.
but i know things are getting louder and louder generally, im sure all the big tunes will be around the -8 mark.
was only an observation, mixdown itself is very very good, just that extra couple of dBs at the end overdid a bit for me, IMO
All completely subjective.
I used to use the ozone thing a lot too, the best of the mastering packages IMO (except the limiter). Now i use the elephant limiter and UAD eqs and comps (neve stuff mainly)
Cheers

finally im gonna comment:
ascend- nice vibe, didnt like the vocal sample, but good use of it
dlx- good beginnig, good bass, but the the elements dont fit together harmonically??? kind of crooked...
dz- little to much accordion, bassline good sound but strange pitch, dont fit harmonically, good sfx, eveythin else very, very nice
feasibel - yo, like it, cant wait for the winner vid!
jolly wailer-very good, reggae ish, nice accordeon chop-offs, kind of the same like we did, nice use of vocal, only didnt take the sample cause i thaught everybody´d take the same bits, top!
krio-the jazzy approach, like it somehow, has some early 90s hiphop vibe, top!
martello- killer!!! like it all the way!
paradigm x- very good for two days innit, not so much change, but smooth to listen
relik - good one
