In respect to whether "more" is really better I'd recommend the book "The Paradox of Choice" by Barry Schwartz. It's not so much about the morality of excessive consumption as it is about it's psychological effects. Basically, how we choose and how we feel about our choices.
Long story short, we are generally happier w/ our selections when our options are limited but not *too* limited. In fact, our returns on happiness diminish pretty sharply when we are faced w/ too much choice, and for certain types of people who place high emphasis on making the "right" choice in all things, this is tantamount to psychological torture.
anyway, just thought i'd throw that out there...it's a good read.

What an awfully short "manifesto"...in fact, I'm not sure you can even call it such. Where's the sharp incisive (yet impatient) analysis of the prevailing orthodoxy? Where's theblueprint for the better tommorrow?.
Dammit...this guy didn't even leave himself enough room to work up a good rant

Re: less is more
say quite a lot about aspirational socioty that people would more than likly give up a days garenteed pay then give up the possability/dream of a pay rise.Parson wrote:Is this the American Dream?
Percentage of Americans earning over $30,000 a year who said they would give up a day's pay each week for a day of free time: 70%
Percentage of Americans earning less than $20,000 a year who said they would make the same pay-for-free-time trade: 48%
Percentage of workers willing to forego raises and promotions to devote more time to their families: 34%

Hmm..charity or big pimping lifestyle. Oxfam or crack'n'ho''s. Decisions, decisions.badger wrote:yeah thats ace. would like to think id be able to do the same thing in his situation but i doubt i could to be honest
I like reading about philanthropy but after a lifetime of brokeness, I think the latter. I'd probably run the business into the ground just for good measure and to release my inner-cuntyness.
It won't make me happy of course, you should all pity me if that happens. Or if you really hate me, just start sending me some dollars over paypal and watch my will to live dissipate as I drown in moolah. It's a harsh punishment, but I shall accept my fate graciously
Hmm....
