I suppose the interesting thing is if this ultra synthy stuff has arisen as a sort of antidote to downbeat halfstep- because the biggest sound now on most dubstep dancefloors is really synth/mid heavy wobble stuff that isn't so far from the stuff coming out of hyperdub in a way. I mean, look at Spongebob.

Also in that interview 9 says how not smoking weed when making beats really changes what you make- makes it a lot more colourful and unrestrained. I wonder if the shift in dubstep in general towards more emphasis on the mid range has anything to do with the smoking ban? Bit of a reach I know lol

hmm i think the draw thing is a massive generalisation, for some i think it opens up possibilities and colours rather than restricting them, i reckon it all depends on the individual and their subjective response to the drug. quite an appropriate place for this given the tune in the title

im very glad of this stuff however it came about though, i think its an amazing sound. Rustie is a badboy, this tune is fucking sick

Not a massive fan of excessive synths tbh but actually really liking the Ikonika release and this Zomby 12. Kode's signed tunes here that can blow a dancefloor but retain enough edge and difference to put them miles above the rest of the synthy crap around at the moment.

Absolutely, although given that dubstep is club music I think there's inevitably an influence on the music that is most popular according to what drugs the dancefloor are powered by.

Good point about the tune name- I suppose you might say that both tunes sound like either of those states you get from smoking- weird wonky and buzzy vs. moody zoning... but I'm not going to push for that lol

as far as the original vs. the remix debate goes, these two are vastly different. as much as i love the original you've got to admit that it's a bit of a one-trick pony. need some time to get my head around rustie's more varied interpretation. lovin his work on 'jagz the smack' and 'dre$$ to sweat' though...

Interesting read, although I have to say that despite his Futurist sensibilities regarding his music directions I don't agree with his ideas on Modernism and music at all.

Literature and the visual arts were the key in Modernism during the the mid to late 19th Century with sonic / aural aspects following a lot later. Anyhow! Good read nonetheless...

taking the weed thing as a seperate issue completely I think it's interesting just looking at different people's perceptions of what constitutes "colourful" music.. as a term it's obviously pretty vague but I really think it's a mistake to assume that big, bashy neon synths and overtly wonky wackiness translates necessarily into colourful, interesting music... to me, stuff like Sine of the Dub, with those piercing reverbed stabs against that grainy sub and those vocals, is easily as colourful and individual sounding as the more dancefloor synth stuff in Kode's sets now. I really like both styles but I think it's a mistake to dismiss all the minimal stuff as dated or sludgey just because it doesn't fit in with the lofi grainy synth wonk standards of 2008
