not going to be posted. sorry.Shinobi wrote:Also, any idea if Caspa's set was taped, or is he the type of guy that doesn't allow taping/spreading of his life sets? If not, I would love to get my hands on that and would be able to spread it through my blog, a bunch of bittorrent sites, themixingbowl.org, etc.

If you don't mind, can I ask why? Did it not get recorded due to Caspa having a policy against such a thing, or is it because he's more against spreading it on the 'net than he is it being recorded and traded amongst friends?Sea Monkey wrote:

In my many years of seeing Phish I met an innumerable amount of tapers who knew they had rare copies of shows that nobody else had and they would sit on them, refusing to seed or spread them because they wanted to feel like they had something nobody else had. I really hope that's not the case here.
If it is and whoever has it wants to trade, I have a bunch of advance copies -- including Scuba's new album, not even out yet -- and invites to torrent sites such as what, waffles, and stmusic if trade bait is in order.
It was recorded but Caspa wanted to keep it off of the net, that way it preserves the vibe of going to see him live. You had to be there kinda thing.Shinobi wrote:If you don't mind, can I ask why? Also most people respect the artists and dont illegaly download and share their music, id love to hear the scuba album but ill wait to buy it.
Definitely understandable, I know many other DJs that feel the same way.Superisk wrote:

Actually, it is pretty cool. I work for a music magazine in Chicago and have access to a wealth of advance copies due to our coverage of upcoming artists and releases. If we're to review the records before they come out, advance copies play a large part in that. I have the utmost respect for the artists and their intellectual property -- otherwise I would have picked a different career -- but I appreciate the implication that I don't. I really like Caspa, loved the show and wanted a copy. Sounds to me like you guys have it and don't want to share, which is fine. Forgive me for mentioning those sites, point taken, stuff like that isn't allowed here.ozeb wrote:Not cool.Shinobi wrote:If it is and whoever has it wants to trade, I have a bunch of advance copies -- including Scuba's new album, not even out yet -- and invites to torrent sites such as what, waffles, and stmusic if trade bait is in order.

I dont have Caspas set, no one will have it apart from the promoter who wont share it with anyone on Caspas request.Shinobi wrote: Sounds to me like you guys have it and don't want to share, which is fine.
I am all for legal sharing and spreading the sound which is why my set is available for download.
i've been involved with a radio station for many years now and we get shite tons of promo material which is given to us from labels with the understanding that it will not be shared or distributed (and carrying legal speak that implicates that as well). that kind of talk can get you banned from this and many other boards, it is actually illegal for this website to allow space for non-legit trading of music.Shinobi wrote:Definitely understandable, I know many other DJs that feel the same way.Superisk wrote:

as far as the recorded set goes...unlike jam band bootleg shows, people who listen to dubstep and other electronic dance music don't always just listen to it. alot of times live sets with exclusive tracks will be subject to cutting and chopping by less than honorable "djs" who will then play the previously exclusive tracks in their own mixes without consent of the artists making the music.
it all really comes down to respecting the artists and their creations, ya know?
I think the fact that you referred to Scuba's album as 'trade bait' about sums it up here. Thing is, it's Paul Rose, and not you, who put his time and work into that album. So it doesn't seem fair that you're using its value to other people for your own personal gain, does it?Shinobi wrote:Definitely understandable, I know many other DJs that feel the same way.Superisk wrote:

It's very much a part of dubstep that we give the artists the credit and respect they're due for the hours they put into their tunes. When you're given advanced copies in a professional context for professional reasons, the fact that you have access to such things doesn't transfer ownership of the work to you, or give you the right to give it away to people as a bargaining chip. In other words, it's not yours to give and its a disrespect to the producer to do so without their direct permission.
I get crap all the time for refusing to share dubs that producers have given me, but it's the bare truth that unless you've made it or your label is releasing it, it doesn't belong to you- and therefore, you have no right to share it. These people who aren't giving you the recording aren't being stingy. They're honoring the wishes of the person who is responsible for the recording even existing.
Sorry man but I have to agree with people here that leveraging your position at a music magazine where music has been provided to you in advance is again, not cool. It was given to your publication in confidence that it will be used solely for the purpose of promotion - not to be potentially leaked to a torrent site or used for trade.Shinobi wrote:Actually, it is pretty cool. I'm sticking to my guns here. Not cool.
All extremely good points. I now understand the spoken and unspoken rules of the board, I assure you it won't happen again. I had gotten Plastician's set from the same monthy night, so I wrongly assumed it would be possible to find Caspa's as well.
I apologise for offering advance copies for trade. I understand its not technically allowed on many messageboards, but on others I've frequented it still seems to go on unimpeded. Anyway, like I said I apologise and I won't bring it up again.
