Hah, I swear that guy has played about 100 police roles? He seemed really familiar first time I saw him.

I think typecasting is pretty natural in a show as good as this. If you get really attached to a show, and if it's immersive enough you'll blatantly think of the actors as the characters they play..

If the actors are good though they'll get you past that eventually innit. If they're one dimensional then they won't, but that's just bad acting :)

That reminds me of an interview I read w/ Idris Elba (Stringer) where he said that when he interacts w/ fans in the states he supresses his accent and talks to them like Stringer, out of the concern that hearing him talk normally would totally destroy the character of "Stringer" in their minds.

McNulty does a great Bal'mer accent, btw. When I first saw the show, I thought he was a native.

UK crew repping differently :)

So are there any really bad, fake Baltimore accents in the show just out of curiosity?

No one really stands out to me as having a particularly bad accent.....alot of the cast doesn't seem to be using any region-specific accent at all....which is kinda true for Baltimore, in general. It's only the people that have lived here for years and years that have the distinctly noticeable accents. Joe could probably spot the accents easier than I could, though, since I've only lived here for about 8 years now.

McNulty just was able to impress me by getting down those fine differences between "water" and "werter" Kima is pretty good too. I don't know where she's from originally, but I know ppl that talk just like her.

Herc sticks out like a sore thumb w/ his Brooklyn, NY accent, though...lol

i remember this. and -- you know people in Baltimore would look at him funny. A brother with a british accent -- they don't know about that.

The best accent on the show -- Snoop. Then again, she's from Baltimore and if you've read her life story, she's not real far from the character she's playing. McNulty -- brilliant as ever.

I live 10 minutes out of baltimore, I like D.C. better, though the Orioles are a better team than the Nationals

It's hard to call any of these guys strictly "good" or "bad" though. D definitely had a good heart, but he did his fair share of fucked up things too. D's whole freedom in the first season came at the expense of other people's lives.
that's what i love about it, the moral ambivalence. i've never seen a cop show that paints such a raw picture of both sides of the law (although i've heard The Shield is pretty similar in that respect).

i think series 5 is going to be the pick of the bunch; it's certainly what the end of 4 seems to be hinting at. everyone's coming back into the major crimes fold, daniels is going to have much more power and influence and the stanfield/chris & snoop/michael storyline is blatantly going to end in apocalyptic bloodshed

poor bodie though :(

The best thing Omar's been in apart from the Wire is surely Trapped in the Closet as the husband of the midget-shagging Bridget.

I shed tears over that storyline, honestly.

You gotta give credit to dominic west and idris elba. I wouldn't have been able to tell that they are english.. I guess it's easier to do an american accent for an englishman than the other way around.
I read about funny thing about dominic west's accent in wikipedia:
To play McNulty, West had to master an American Standard Midwestern accent. In one episode where Jimmy went undercover as an English businessman, he attempted to put on a parody of a Cockney accent, but was told it sounded "too fake
concerning joe's question: when I saw dominic west in '300' I was kind of disappointed.. I don't think this role suited him that well and I kind of thought 'mcnulty stop pretending to be someone else' :D.. it's scary what good tv shows can do to you sometimes..

I think it was at that time my exgirl mentioned he was actually british. funny shit

omg. just saw this thread.
all i have to say is that this is the best show in the history of TV !

watched the seasons from 1 to 4 real marathon style :)
probably have to buy the dvd boxes if i can find 'em

cant wait for the fifth and final season..
its funny how all the crap tv-shows go forever, but this ends after five solid seasons ... but maybe its good that they dont try and milk the good show too much and know when to put an end to it, and finish it with style...

really the best show ever ... Lost is good too, but The Wire is on its' own level

Ended up watching all of Series 1 and have watched half of Series 2 again over the last week. It's too addictive. I've noticed a lot of things the second time around that I missed the first time too. Forgotten them all now though, usefully.

I forgot what a maniac Webay (can't spell it) was when he was on the street.

Best show ever

I'm going to give this a try...but talking of the drug trade in Baltimore, anyone read this?

Image

The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inter-City Neighbourhood. It's a non-fiction book by David Simon, the writer of Homide: A Year on the Killing Streets (which became Homicide: Life on the Street). It basically follows a bunch of people who sound very much like the kind of people you've been talking about...and I've just noticed that it too was made into an HBO series.

Oh, and I've just noticed David Simon created and is the head writer of The Wire.

Fucking hell, I better get on it eh!!!!

^^ good series. From what I understand, the HBO series was basically a precursor to the Wire (w/ some of the same cast). I only caught about one or two episodes when it was being shown, though.

Speaking of which, they just wrapped up the filming for Season 5 around last week or so. They're supposed to start airing it next January

I definitely can't wait...i guess that means I'll actually have to get HBO now....lol.
