set the output to just under 0 (like -.02) and start bringing down the threshold until you hear distortion. then back off.
Nonononooonononononononoonoooononononooooo!!!!!!!!
100% completely and utterly NOT the way to use L-whatever in practice, and the reason for (IMHO anyway) 99% of the shitty L-whatever jobs you hear all over the place.
Use the little handle
between the threshold and ceiliong controls to
apply the limiting at the same subjective level. Other limiters have similar ways of achieving the same thing.
When you have a sound you can stand that isn't too flat and shitty sounding, then set the threshold to -0.whatever (generally .4 here to avoid ISPs).
(I hope you know that you know I ain't bitching at you sir - nothing but respect here!)

Emmm...even Waves itself recommends this method (what TeReKeTe described) to get fast results:S
I think the best way then - don't listen anyone, even Macc, just listen and trust your ears

^ none taken. just givin' the boys a quick route on how to get things acceptably loud, outside of equal percieved levels-- everyone's gotta LISTEN as well.

Missed you - doh!
For anyone else reading this, the outcome is exactly the same and it takes zero extra time. You set the ceiling and move one knob, simple. How long can it take??
But it is the order (ceiling last), and which knob you move (the little one in the middle instead of threshold), that make
ALL the difference
This way you completely eliminate the chances of being fooled by the extra volume, and make judgments based on the quality. The level follows naturally from that, and you avoid ending up with squashed fuzzy mush (unless that is what you want)
