I'm really, really picky about covers. And there are certain bands/songs people just shouldn't cover.Joy Division being one especially.I actually liked Unbroken until I heard that shitty version. Then all respect went out the window.I lost loads of respect for NIN for covering 'Dead Souls' for the same reason. The Jarboe version of the song is very beautiful, very tasteful, and has the one trait I look for in a cover:it sounds like she could have written the song herself, because it is achingly beautiful.I cried the first time I heard it.Yeah...I actually did.I was going through some serious emotional shit at the time, but it really wouldn't have made a difference. And my respect for Swans went up quite a few notches because of it.my_war wrote:i like it alot.Echo Wanderer wrote:Actually,it's shit.Saw them play it live in '94(I was living in San Diego at the time.Myself and about 8 of my friends walked out(it was only thier 3rd song in).In fact,I went in to Off The Record the next day and traded my Unbroken 7"s in.my_war wrote:nope.Echo Wanderer wrote:Swans - Love Wil Tear Us Apart[Black Version - Jarboe on vocal]
The ONLY good cover of 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'.
unbroken's cover is amazing.
were they bad because you don't like their music or for some other reason?
Ian Curtis had a really fucked up life(and death).Joy Division was so important, not just for the minimal, drums and bass focused darkness of thier sound, but the affectations and sheer conviction that Ian Curtis had on the music and listener is virtually unrivalled. To ruin a Joy Division song is to disrespect that legacy.I honestly think it's a sick joke for people to take the art he made from his suffering and wring it into something they can't completely understand just because they think "man, that's such a cool song!".
