Cockos (the makers of Reaper) are fighting the good fight - even giving away their shit - so if you consider yourself an 'ethical pirate' that doesn't want to support big corporations that fuck everything up and would rather support the little guy trying to do it right - then support Reaper if nobody else.
Reaper has changed my sound since I started using it fulltime a month or so ago - all for the BETTER. Still figuring out a lot of the hotkeys and all that but really, this program blows doors on the competition in my book. I've even had one of my friends jump ship from Logic on his Mac because Reaper is so damn sexy...

Off the top of my head I am unable to answer either of your questions..
I'd recommend reading the relevant sections of the manual downloadable from here ---> http://www.cockos.com/reaper/userguide.php
Or visit the Reaper forum and ask in the 'How To' section ---> http://forum.cockos.com/forumdisplay.php?f=21

Seems like an absolute arse ache to switch from Cubase but there are some very nice features.
I like the way you can arrange tracks into folders and control them as a single unit, just like group channels but probably a whole lot easier to manage.
Interface is a bit of a let down for me... though might just be because I've not really spent much time on it.
Also 4MB download...loads up in about 5 seconds on my pc. damn it's quick. is it just as stable? That is a MAJOR plus.

Is it the interface or the theme you don't like? The theme is skinnable and there are plenty of new themes available from here --> http://stash.reaper.fm/tag/Themes (The Studio 1 theme is looking pretty sexy imo, it has that nice futures-untold blue I like

Interface functions mostly on drag and drop, keyboard shortcuts or context sensetive menus (much like any daw then). It is customisable, which means you could get every acton you ever perform onto the toolbar or bound to keyboard shortcuts.....

Open the preferences dialogue (Ctrl-P or 'Options' > 'Preferences').Project EX wrote:First off, i've read the manual but this didnt quite answer my question.

Select the 'Midi Devices' Tab in the preferences window.
Ensure that your midi controller device is set to 'enable' in the 'mode' column.
If your device isn't listed, you need to exit Reaper, and restart it making sure that you have switched on your midi device and that it has fully initialised before reopening Reaper.
That should do it!

Also there is no need for a midi cable into my soundcard, or is there?

Re: The Reaper Q&A Thread
Depends on you midi keyboard. If it is USB or Firewire (which the Oxygen is), then there is no need for a midi cable or midi port on your soundcard.

Re: The Reaper Q&A Thread
Nice, going home now. Will try asap.
. Big up for the portable freeware studio man. Just getting into reaper.

Re: The Reaper Q&A Thread

Re: The Reaper Q&A Thread
Okay, assuming your keyboard is setup correctly in the preferences window, you'll still need to assign it to the sequencer channel you wish to control.
Right click on the VU meter on the sequencer channel in question and from the drop down menu select 'Midi Input' > 'All Midi Inputs' > 'All Channels'. this should tell Reaper to listen on all midi channels for incoming midi data like note on/off messages, pitch bend data etc.
If your keyboard is plugged in and configured correctly, it will also apear in the drop down list and you can select that instead.
You may also need to click on the 'monitor' button for the sequencer channel in question, that way, when you play a few notes on your keyboard you'll be able to 'monitor' it. With the default Reaper 3 skin loaded, the button looks like a little speaker just to the right of the VU meter.
Hope you manage to get things sorted!
