We pretty much had all the Smog guys up here early on.. which in turn got people interested in going to the shows in LA. Gonna be a good summer with more beach parties and such.

1000 isn't enough. if one in ten people that picked up one of your fliers decided to go to the night, that's still only 100 people in attendance if you're very lucky. one in 20 or one in 30 is far more realistic, you'd be better off printing up to 5000 flyers/posters.

don't trust people on the internet. i learnt that a while ago. generally, if they say they're going, it actually means they like the look of it...

anyone saying they wouldn't go to a night on the principle of the flyer design seems like a right knob  stay home then.
ridiculous.
the DMZ flyers are designed really really well. your flyer says a lot about your night - DMZ's flyer is a simple, no-bullshit graphical representation of their club night. there's no shit on the flyer that doesn't need to be there - just like their rave.

EVERYBODY, consciously or unconsciously, will make a judgement of the event from what the flyer/promotional material looks or sounds like. if you don't understand this then you're a lost cause. image is pretty much everything!

i'm no expert but this is what i've learnt:
integrity > popularity
respect > money
a few happy, dedicated ravers > a load of mashed up idiots there for the sake of it

it seems like people are equating flash with actual substance.. that was my point.

I mean, I agree.. when I said "the flyers are nothing special" I mostly meant in the sense that it wasn't overwhelmed by aesthetic bells and whistles.

now back to the thread, which is only partially about flyer design choice.

the point is that if a flier is well designed (this has nothing to do with bells and whistles or "hipster" graphics) it follows that the person throwing the event is capable of successfully executing that part of the package at least, and so probably can make sure the rest of the pieces come together well too. however if the fliers are poorly designed, it indicates that the person who put them out doesn't really know what they are doing, so the event will most probably suck balls as well.

this is not a hard and fast rule of course. but it usually holds true in my experience. the best events are thrown by people who understand that if something is worth doing, it's worth doing right. on every level.

but a nice flier isn't going to pack your house either make no mistake. if you have dubstep fans in the area try bringing a headliner in that they may have heard of. mid level type not a huge name or you'll lose your ass.

Venue really is crucial as well, especially if you are playing slower dubstep. You have to know the current and regular patrons for the venue. If they are used to 4x4 dance music, you will lose them fast if they aren't expecting it.

Most people want to hear more upbeat stuff when they are out, especially girls. And there is truth earlier posts... get the girls there, guys follow. Most girls I know are only getting into dubstep because of newer electro-dub stuff coming out. They want to dance.

If you are going for a chill vibe, which is great sometimes, make sure the venue lends to that. Because it's going to be a big part of the experience if I'm not up dancing.

You have to have a package deal to make it successful.

indeed. Phoenix is weird in alot of ways, the venues here blow so bad though. I still can't think of a place I love to play besides the Blunt Club because no one has the system to support the sound. You lot have no idea how sad it is here when it comes to sound.

I want to make a t-shirt that says "your shitty sound can't handle my bass" in big 80's graffiti font.

Vital- this is Issa. Sorry I couldn't make it man! I work all the time but there is always the next. I did a hip-hop/dubstep/soul/funk night for 9 months back in 2006-2007. It started slow but ended up being really cool, and ended because all involved started to become too busy with either school or work to keep it going. Anyway, keep it moving.

FYI, if you ever get to it, flyer at first fridays, I will be spinning there at the UM gallery this eve. 2 stacks blaring outside for everyone. I always get a great reaction... might get you some good exposure.

I would also agree with some of the other voices here that the flyer could use some work, but maybe the grittiness is what you are wanting. flyers do make a big difference though.

without badmouthing my homeboy vital sines aka dj essential aka arizonas 1st junglist circa 93 (ooh and i was #2) there a re a few factors with that night that dont help in making it a success. The flyer is a bad design, and xeroxed on paper, and left at a handful of headshops and venues around the valley,....... its by no means really pushed with either quality or quantity on the promotions tip. Second, that bar its at never gets anyone there for anything! tons of nights have failed there ,...repeatedly!hiphop, electronic, bands,.....etc....people just dont go there???ooooooh,.....and someone made a point of the idea of starting from scratch or pulling from the different electronic dance scenes,...... Vital Sines hasn't been involved with the dubstep movement until just recently, and no one really knows who or what he's doing, and frankly didn't have the best reputation in the past? So......Vital was at my house for a party the other night and i got nothing but rispect, ...I just felt that I had to defend PHOENIX on the DUBSTEP issue because we've been working hard to build and maintain it for the past two years. This month our new monthly DUBMe!MONTHLY starts on the 24th and Ive got HOODZ (6blocc & UOME) comin out from LA, next month its SMOGLA invasion of PHX, last year we had Joe Nice, 12th PLanet,Bassnectar, Gaslamp Killer, Flying Lotus, ULtrablack, Issa, Xian1,
.......anyway,....just wanted to be clear that we're gaining ground here in the valley of the sun, and that dubstep is alive and well. no hateration, ...just clarification, rispect the nation! (ps , put your 5's in the air!!!)

Not to mention the TUFF LOVE DUBS imprint which got dope reviews here on the board and beyond is based out of the valley owned by DUBSTRANGERS (Xian1 & Ca$h) and UlTRABLACK(Adroit & Theonespy) and is getting ready to come with some quality sounds from some heavy hitters. we're just getting our distro straight , but be on the lookout for TLD001 hiiting the digishops soon!!!!

arizona is just a terrible place for club based electronic music events. it's been like that for two decades.

THANK YOU for ALL of your advice!!!!
We realize it is our first night, and it takes time to build up a following. The flier sucked, I guess I need to make new ones.

Respect to everyone who was helpful.

Some sweet designs. I'm a designer by trade, but rarely do dubstep/underground nights, simply because they don't pay that well. Done a few for free for friends and such, but I mainly stick to House/more commercial genres for my actual work.

A few of mine:

A lot of the nights are do are for between 500-2000 people, so pretty big turnouts, even in todays shitty economy. Fact is, less people go to clubs in summer (sounds stupid I know but its true) and numbers are dwindling everywhere, unfortunately. Hopefully things will get better, for all our sakes!
