In all honesty I don't frequent this forum as often as I used to because of the clusterfuckery of it all. I like the siloing idea to a degree, but am not sure if sorting it [exclusively] by DAW is necessarily the answer.

A lot of the frustration for us may come from the wildly different experience levels in here: there's guys here who've literally been making music since the 70's and dream in wiring flowcharts, and then there's even more 15 year olds with a crack of some app they just got who want to know how to "make that ____ sound that ____ does..." - and when you start asking 'em simple questions they come back with "oi, I ain't got time fe all dis geekological bollocks, just tell me how to do it instantly!"

It's one thing when these latter posts are one in eight or so;

it's entirely another when these are the majority of posts.

Oh yes: finished dubs in another forum FOR SURE.

yea it is kind of frustrating when you've spent years reading or through trial and error and people demand a simple answer that's right in the manual

This is where it gets tricky, because just being a noob is in no way a bad thing: noobs ask questions that should get asked and re-asked - I still learn new stuff all the time too, and a lot of it as a byproduct of the great answers some noob questions get in response (like the whole gain structure thread - wish I'd read that 10 years ago!)

Just as often tho, these questions devolve into flame wars over DAWs, Mac vs. PC, Alpaca vs. Ham...

I don't think we can realistically censor peoples' tangents and piss-takes. All we can do is sort of corral the herd in a general direction and hope they don't stampede.

who cares if noobs ask dumb questions. if someone cares enough to reply they will. and the asker will be grateful if they do. if not dont flame them, because they DONT know what they are doing. even if its a dumb question i enjoy taking THE TWO SECONDS that it takes to reply. but if its an organization thing....oh well all the good stuff is stickied anyway.

Seems like there are a few threads that pretty much cover everything, each with a million posts each.

Sometimes w/ the quest to organize, you can over do it, and get too organized - so much so that the organization becomes an impediment to access. I think we've reached that point.

I don't mind topic area rules, like post dubs in the dubs section, post production issues in the production forum, that level of division seems effective.

My sentiments exactly - it's the same on NSB aswell.

This is why I created Bedroom-Beats. The information shared on these forums - some of which is gold - I wanted to take all this and put it on one place on the internet.

I am trying to get as many talented and experienced people as possible to send me their pearls of wisdom.

People who come here come here for two reasons. To learn about music tech and to piss about. Both valid reasons imo, this is a web forum after all.

A thread about waveshaping functions or mid-side matrixes without the addition of fury animal jokes can get a bit dry.... I can see why it can be somewhat distracting, but these jokes balance the po faced with the jokers.

If you're really serious about learning, as Daft tnuc correctly pointed out, there are plenty of books and magazines that can boost your knowledge without references to ham. There are also forums that don't accept any shit like http://studio-central.com/phpbb/index.php

Threads like the Production Bible are actually useful for those who are willing to read through them. Those of you who are unwilling to do a minimal amount of reading need to stfu or take up another hobby imo. No musician or producer ever got good without lots of practice and some periods of learning.

Admittedly, the search function on this forum only really provides results when the user is specific & willing to wade through unrelevant results. Google on the other hand, often provides perfect results for questions posed in plain language. There is no excuse for not googling something like (how to reset (initialise) Albino 3).....

The production bible in particular has been streamlined as much as possible. It isn't perfect, but then as Justin Roche pointed out correctly, none of the contributers are paid. If you want it better, help make it better with logical and relevant contributions!

I agree that the gain structure thread could be more useful if it were condensed into one super post, but then it is interesting to read the questions and answers that have arisen naturally.

My bottom line is, if google isn't working & there's nothing on youtube, post your question. If you want to discuss something music related, post away! If the question is answerable by reading the manual.........

I'm not even bothered whether questions & feedback requests go into a single thread or into the main subforum. Being anal about it only puts people off using the forum. Likewise, it is helpful for those that are only interested in a specific topic to be able to follow one thread instead of trailing through the forum...

The Production part of this forum serves people on many levels.

Noobs come and get flamed and learn to ask smarter questions. It was suggested on some thread a while ago that people that post here should have some kind of musical background or know how to use vst's, i think that defeats the purpose of this forum. This is a place to learn. Is you have something constructive to say, post it, if you cant be bothered with it then move on.

As you stick arround and learn to navigate, you pick up so many things. But only if you are willing to read. If it is irrelevant or over your head you skip it or ask for clarification. You can see who the smart ones are by the way they reply.

There is some funny shit on here, and it works as relief when you are frustrated about something and ask for help. You read on some other stuff have a laugh and come back to your topic and there ususally is an answer in there for you when you come back.

There is nothing wrong with the setup. I think it is just some people that are too serious in here and some people that just come to fuck around.
