those are just famous ones that have a general sound to them

the garage sale ones arent going to have memorable names, there are loads of one-offs that never got full attention

go look at simian mobile discos setup just a ring of samplers that they picked up over the years along with a mpc i believe and looped into ableton live

they certainly dont sound like they are using 100 percent software

name some of these samplers then.

you stated in this thread that you should stay away from the mpc series and instead should go and pick up a couple of cheap samplers. what "other samplers" have quirks and characteristics?

i hate production forums for this very reason. a lot of the time there is so much disinformation spread just for the sake of it.

Older (pre millennia) samples do have interesting characteristics because of the limits of the technology. sampling something at 12 bits sounds very different than running sounds thru a bit reducer set at 12 bits, also some have variable sample rates and bit depths, and the older akai's have very nice filters and internal processors. I have an old kurzweil sampler and it makes insane sounds not only because of the ad/da converters and gain stage, but because of the way you can process the sounds internally. That said, its a pain in the ass to work with and it takes forever. Two good plugins for a lofi digital sound are D16 decimort which is actually a model of a ad/da circuit with variable sample rates and an anti aliasing filter that can be turned on and off. also a sampler called morgana: http://www.112db.com/vintage/morgana/

its an emulation of the old mirage sampler and its pretty amazing.

A couple more of the older samplers with very distinct sounds:

Ensoniq Mirage (8bit, 32khz max with analog filters)

Yamaha tx16w (12bit, 50khz in mono with digital filters)

I still keep the tx16w around as it has 8 outs and i have this "pie in the sky" idea of setting it up as the brain for an electronic drum kit later in life. Or i'll pair it with the Atari ST for a retro project.

These were the two I learned on and can honestly say that you will learn things using PITA devices that you can not learn elsewhere.

Sometimes easier isn't better.

A newer sampler with a very distinct sound is the Ensoniq ASR-x (black.) Not so much for the converters but for sonic capabilities afforded by the way they implemented the envelopes, routing and effects.

Understanding how to use a stand alone sampler without the whistles and bells of modern gear can open a whole world of possibilities that may get over looked in this point-click instant gratification reality.

You get real critical of the samples you are willing to take when you only have 720kb of storage to work with :lol:

Though tt is definitely not for everyone.

I have only played around on a Pro a few times and do not recall any difference in the sound it self.

Most of the changes I recall had to do with sequencing and general operations and didn't really change the sampling/editing side of things.

Though I never played with the Stomper synth engine and am not sure if had any relationship with sampled sounds.

on a serious note though, u guys obviously know so much more than i do with all this equipment biz otherwise i would of jumped in on the convo long ago..unfortunatly, its hats off to u all , i wish i had likewise insperation around me for guidance, atleast i have lots of words to research now .lol
neway im all ears for this akai s2000, if it does wot i would like it to achieve to then maybe it would be a basic steppin stone untill i feel i have enuff pennys for one of them mpc beasts...

as it goes i noticed alot of people comenting on 'software' that u can use on pc that does the same thing ..
excuse me if u was not talking about that its just ive been askin about and ive heard alot about this software, cheaper and very work efficiant..

i think EVERYONE misunderstood me

the point of having glitchy hardware wasnt to make the songs on the device itself, but to have unique samples for software that no one else has

yeah but some people are using hardware as the foundation of their music workstation and therefore that has to be a stable system, something you can rely on to work the same each time you use it.

Although I've been using a lot of different sampler such as MPC 60, SP1200, S900 E3, E4, I'm a happy user of Kontakt now.
