Second half of Truant was seriously channeling this to me;

some of the vocal/bass harmonizations are just so beautiful.. i thought ashtray wasp was his weakest release yet (still enjoyed it however), but this came back full force with some dark pieces.. really really love this release. i enjoy the fact that its not completely cohesive, it comes off as compiled raw snippets like a demo.. i enjoyed that aspect of it.

Yeah, with emphasis on the CHEESE. Some of the melodies sounded like '90s airline TV ads. Didn't like it one bit tbh.wolf89 wrote:don't really like this too much. tracks feel like a load of sketches thrown together. Burial sounds like he's sticking to some of formula too much. it's also a bit cheesy. Sounds like he's trying for this "it's so emotional and beautiful" edge but it sounds a little too much like he's trying. His tracks used to have more of a dark atmosphere with a more subtle melancholy theme to them. This lacks that edge. I still don't think it's terrible and I prefer it to the last ep it's just it doesn't really measure up to his earlier stuff.

Feeling Truant, not so much Rough Sleeper...
also, i recognise the element of cheese in past releases (even as far back as Untrue), but I dont hear it in this one somehow.

6:12 in Rough Sleeper
like the tunes, but not big on the way they're like seperate tracks, wasn't big on it on Kindred, makes it harder to enjoy start to finish imo

Havent listened to these yet, not had the right moment. But can anyone tell me why they have a problem with the tunes being made up of different parts of many tunes? Loads of you chatting shit about that. Can I get one justifiable reason why its wrong? Because it doesnt fit with what music normally does? And then complain that its formulaic??

i wouldn't agree with people saying it's formulaic but i reckon if he'd fleshed some of the sections out into 4-6 minute tracks it would be a fully amazing epthe wiggle baron wrote:Havent listened to these yet, not had the right moment. Re: New Burial is out...
Its just not the way he works though! Kode9 has said in interviews that it tends to be a case of burial making 30 second loops that kode9 helps him/recommends he teases out into full tunes. But, if thats not the way he wants to make music, what the fucks wrong with that? Would you rather someone isnt true to themself and fleshes these things out longer than feels right to them? Or do you want it to be a 40 track album of minute long tunes?...whats the difference between that and 7/8 tracks spread over 2 sides of a record?
And I see what someone says about not being able to enjoy the tunes as a whole, but thats not what these records are clearly. They are collections of ideas from burial, roughly collated into 2 sides that have some cohesion...and thats it! Doesnt need to be any more.
edit: But of course, if those 7/8 short tracks are shit, theyre shit. Regardless. Just dont see how the multiple tracks criticism could ever be levelled at someone. Feel free to say they dont work as a cohesive whole, and feel free to say they dont flow or something like that, but you simply cant say that its wrong to write music that way...

Yes, this is it man. It's too out there and avant-garde for my feeble little brain. It's fuckin' Burial we're talkin' about anyway. When someone doesn't like something that HE does, it's a poor reflection of how developed their brains are.the wiggle baron wrote:Havent listened to these yet, not had the right moment. Re: New Burial is out...
That's what I'm fucking SAYING man. My wet fingertips (remnants of my drooling session over my keyboard, possibly from my lobotomy) are banging away ANGRILY because my underevolved troglodyte brain just doesn't fuckin' get Burial here. How, I'm asking myself, HOW does he come up with such revolutionary song structures? Can't he just stick to ancient ways? The old school ways?the wiggle baron wrote:lol youre a fucking idiot genevieve
John Cage, ... ok, I'll reluctantly accept his pieces for prepared piano. Hell, even Steve Reich's experiments with phasing are still within the realm of comprehension of my Arthropod-like nervous system. But Burial's ability to stitch togetether different tunes and drown them with a thick hazy layer of static and vinyl pops makes me feel like an infant.. no, an embryo, that Plato is trying to explain the allegory of the cave to.
For fuck's sake, can't you give dumb people like myself a break already?

Re: New Burial is out...
I would prefer longer fleshed out tunes, I feel it struggles to flow and it ends up feeling like a mish-mash of ideas rather a coherent song or few songs. Not that I dislike the sounds or even the songs, it's just I end up really feeling a part then it's stopped and another clip is thrown at me, just my opinion though dudethe wiggle baron wrote:Its just not the way he works though! ok, nothing touches upon his earlier work tho.
Re: New Burial is out...
i like the new ep, kindred and street halo just as much as untrue and probably a bit more than the self titled album.
also IMO untrue and parts of street halo ep are much more 'cheesy' than either kindred or the new ep - endorphin springs to mind. not to say cheesy is a bad thing.
but maybe i'm just weird as i think kindred ep and in particular ashtray wasp is the best thing he's ever done.
