yeah i know you can tweak a million features and customise every single aspect of the program to your liking. but this doesn't really appeal to me when i have to look up a thread on the reaper forums just so i can install a theme. every good feature of reaper seems to be an "extension". that's all well and good but i can't install these things because i'm retarded. i also don't like the piano roll. i think it's kind of shit. the things i like about reaper is that it's fast.
i think it's great that the reaper devs update so frequently but that sort of system also has downsides. too many cooks...
with the devs integrating feature requests at such a rapid rate it sometimes takes a lot longer for big updates to come through. why is the piano roll in reaper still shit? sometimes a development team needs to focus on specific targets without outside interference.
yeah...
earlier in the year i ditched my cracked copy of ableton 7 and bought reaper and renoise. thought "i want to be legit..let me actually get something i can afford" i had used the renoise demo pretty extensively...and fiddled with reaper for a week or something like that.
i think it's good that you can customize an entire daw to work the way you want...especially if you're into that sort of thing. but at the same time, learning the set system and ways of daw is also good. i enjoyed ableton. while i like reaper i can't say i enjoy it as much. like you said the extensions thing - that shit drives me insane sometimes. like change track colours...downloaded i think two sets of extensions for that. had to read 2 or 3 different threads on the reaper forums to understand. and they still don't function properly lol. i end up just clicking the #1 button and flicking through random colours.
similarly, freeze tracks is another set of extensions. took an hour to figure out it's not an option per se in reaper. right now i just render to stems...but really? lol. another set of extensions? i dled the extensions on the forums and thought "i probably need to read yet another thread to understand whats going on" they're just sitting on my desktop
there are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many options in reaper...it's almost fucked up. like right click on anything and the amount of options listed is unreal. and i'm not a total idiot. it's just that....something like a daw....it's great that there are infinite ways to make one thing operate, but i think it's beneficial for people like me to just give us the set rules and make us learn them and work within them.
i'd like to see where reaper is in about 5 years. or even 1 or 2 years. probably will shit all over similar style programs like cubase and logic or whatever.
then again, i don't actually compose shit in reaper. everything is in renoise and then i send it over into reaper.
seriously considering getting ableton suite 8 tbh. i know ableton fairly well. why abandon it?
