Re: Beat Music Makers
Yeah, I don't hear any bass/sub at all.
Re: Beat Music Makers
Same with my usual approach, I get the musical element of the track sorted, looping how I want it, then the bassline and drums fit in easily to that as it's "obvious" the spaces they need to be in.zosomagik wrote:It feels like it's been awhile since I've been on DSF. Work is a bitch, but anyway. I've been trying to write some better basslines lately because I feel like it's one things that really holds back my beats. I's curious as to how some of you guys that are into this "L.A. beat scene" type stuff approach your basslines. Tips?
Re: Beat Music Makers
mrray has already been suggested but try the mrray73 mark 2 vers.JizzMan wrote:whats a good (preferrably free) Rhodes VST?
little bit of eqing can get you a pretty nice rhodes sound
Re: Beat Music Makers
That's how I usually approach things. But I find my stuff being stale to me. I think maybe I need to approach the intervals I use differently. I usually just reach for the root of the chord that's playing and then maybe a 3rd or a 5th. I use a lot of 7th chords but find that 7th's in the bass sound like shit. Maybe I'll try just mucking about in the scale, or even try making some vamps and doing some modal bass shit? Re: Beat Music Makers
Try the opposite: Less movement in the bass, and more just in the pocket playing and voicing.
Re: Beat Music Makers
Listen to Jizz. He has been studying.

Re: Beat Music Makers
I often omit 3rds, but I like leaving the 5th in there for girth because it's gonna be in pretty much every chord and extension you play, unless you're playing like a minor7b5 or something. But I got a tune I started working on today, I might put it up here and see what you guys think.the bassline is like as simple as it gets. Root notes plodding along.
Re: Beat Music Makers
You know, another thing, like when you're listening to music, it is one voltage going up and down, well, a left and right so there are two, right, so there is not a distinct bass line in actuality, we pull the bass line out in our mind, we pull it out and separate it from other elements. Well, given that our mind is actually separating and controlling our perception of the music, your hats can change the perception of the bass line, jew know? Like there really is no difference, it is all one thing. So if you wanna make your bass better, make your hats better, and to make your hats better, make your snare better, and to make your snare better, make your kick better, and on and on. Chew know?
Damn. Had a point there, fucked it up. Whattya gonna do?

Soundcloud
It's nowhere near finished, but the idea is there. I'm gonna add another section where the drums switch and get a little busier and bring in some more percussion elements. I'm also gonna add some spacey and 8 bit type incidentals. The bassline gets a little busier in the break section, but I like it. Obviously it needs to be mixed/mastered. But if you guys got any tips/feedback, that would be sick

Re: Beat Music Makers
Been really into DJ Smokey lately, as well as all those Gregar, Whitearmor, Yung Gud (friend of a friend), Suicideyear etc.
Can see why someone would hate this but I enjoy it.
many of these guys have (or used to have at least) really really shitty mixes though

Peep the first few pages of the thread, there's a bunch of dope shit. Also, if you're diggin' the Ta Ku vibes give this a listen.
Re: Beat Music Makers
I know, I stumbled upon him accidentally. I'm not sure how popular he really is, but he has an extensive collection of work. And it's all fuckin' great.
Re: Beat Music Makers
