Whilst I personally find rewiring reason gets me the best results I also couldn't disagree with you more, it's much easier to get a good mixdown if you rewire but that's the only benefit i've found. Some AMAZING tunes have been made with reason stand alone and I don't just use the instruments. I use it's sequencer too because imo it shits all over any other I've seen or used.-[2]DAY_- wrote:Admittedly I didn't read this whole thread, but it doesn't look like anyone even makes mention of my DAW (MOTU digital performer). But I am getting used to it and falling in love.
As you might've expected, I'm also here to say once again , Reason doesn't belong in the debate... It's more of a VSTi with in-house midi sequencer than a DAW !
Which can explain criticisms of its window size/layout....
ReWire and devote a rack to each instrument!
Very true and of course you can do a tune in it... though I had a lot of CPU issues when tracks accumulated. Found myself needing to bounce several tracks that made up large chunks of the tune's core and resample them into loops, which I used Recycle/DrRex to do. This process helped me write some of my better tracks too, just because it forced me in a certain direction. But i couldn't deal with the loss of control over those portions of the mix that I gave up when bouncing.paravrais wrote:Some AMAZING tunes have been made with reason stand alone and I don't just use the instruments. Disagree? or Agree? Not that I don't respect the disagreement I just don't know if that was a typo?paravrais wrote:I also couldn't disagree with you more, it's much easier to get a good mixdown if you rewire but that's the only benefit i've found.
What are they? I've heard of Record... but nothing aside from MIDI in Reason. what's coming in 5? (i heard about OctoREX, looks cool)paravrais wrote:reason has audio capabilities now
I mean you're pretty much right, it's very simple... MIDI tracks send messages, audio sequencer, mixer.... All the basics. What really fucking rocks in DP is the crossfade window, audio quantize, groove quantize, and VocAlign. And routing (imo). And audio editing is nondestructive unless you decide to use the waveform editor. A good option. I would like to experience some other DAWs though.amidoinitrite wrote: I've used Digital Performer.. I didn't like it at first but it slowly grew on me. I still prefer Reaper or Ableton by a long shot!
The layout is extremely ugly, and you have to create 2 tracks to use a vsti. Reaper's routing is a lot better (imo). I think the best thing about DP is that you can pretty much drag anything into its own window.. which I thought was amazing! Also it has a really nice stock EQ. Other than that.. its really nothing special.. I didn't really dig deep so maybe there is more to it!
Actually when I rewire I rarely make use of recording tracks in and resampling on the fly like that. Probably should do more but it's just easier to create an audio channel for each instrument and just play the ableton parts of the song and reason parts in unison. Don't know exactly whats coming in reason 5, just seen a couple of videos where it showed recording audio in and doing some basic editing I believe. Also a drum synth that wasn't all that in the beta and dr.octo rex which is BEAST.-[2]DAY_- wrote:Disagree? or Agree? Also -- other benefits to reWire: For starters, rewire and hit record to lay down some wobble. Hit stop, then change wobble rate... hit record again. Same sound, same channel, no need to automate just edit audio bits and there's your sick syncopated wobblez. ORRRR, change some more params!! lengthen the decay of your envelope... use 2 different polar opposites of the osc. mix. whatever u want, just hit stop, twist a knob, hit record again. All straight to audio in your sequencer. Awesome for Call and Answer basslines. And of course other instruments where u want call and answer, variation, a bit of an automation sequence popped in there...
I never understand people's issues with synced LFO automation.... can't you just track the few rates and edit them together?

Urm yeah. Ni's Battery 3 and Guru.AllNightDayDream wrote:Curious question... Have you seen the Kong drum designer in reason 5? Has there been a VST or something like that that is similar? Cause that shit just blew my mind

Theres lots of them actually.
You can record live samples via direct input into a sampler, such as the NN-XT-[2]DAY_- wrote:paravrais wrote: What are they? I've heard of Record... but nothing aside from MIDI in Reason. what's coming in 5? (i heard about OctoREX, looks cool)
I didn't like it, sounded all crappy imo. But I like to use really natural earthy samples and samples of people falling down stairs and banging candles together etc..AllNightDayDream wrote:Curious question...
